Limpet problem

Alright, collectors are pretty damned useless if the limpets are going to expire after grabbing a single item. I've used them many times before and never beheld this behavior, so what the hell is going on here? Cargo's open, ship's stopped, loot's everywhere, but my limpets are dying after grabbing a single item. I have a 3c collector module, so I KNOW they have a lifespan and I can control two at once; I say again, what the hell is going on here? If it's a bug, fine. Fix it. If not, if it's something I'm doing wrong, then fix it. Aside from shooting down your own limpets, there shouldn't be any wrong way to use them. You fire them, you open the scoop, that's it. No nuance or technique is supposed to be required--that's the POINT of limpet drones.
 
If you target the cargo then deploy your limpets you are programming that limpets to just retrieve that cargo and then it will self destruct. If you do not target any cargo that's floating around and then deploy your limpets it will program to grab anything and everything that's out there for the entire duration of it's lifespan.
 
The single use mode is a handy feature for pirates and scavengers, for when you just want to quickly grab some choice loot from a cloud of debris. It's not a "wrong way" to use limpets at all.
 
I first thought it was 1 limpet 1 collection when I first tried them. I thought it was beyond useless. Now I have started mining I learnt to use them properly. Not a problem anymore just make sure nothing is targeted
 
Yep, as stated, make sure not to target anything when you fire the limpet and it will grab as much as it can.

Single target limpet grabbing not only get's exactly what you target, it also does it slightly faster.
 
See though, this is exactly what I'm talking about. There is no advantage at all to purposely wanting your limpet to expire after one collection. It hovers next to you, waiting for more loot to appear. I don't see why that's not the only mode. Targeting an item should have it divert to that item FIRST; self-destructing after that doesn't make any sense to me. If they wanted to give us a limpet destruct feature, then it needs to just be a key we can press and that's that.
 
Going to disagree with you here.

If I drop into a USS and see 9 units of canisters, 3 Fruit and Veg, 3 Scrap Metal, 2 Phase Alloys and 1 Chem Manipulators.

I only want the Chem Manips. The one use limpet is best here. Especially if I am running my Mats close to the limit.

The other 8 can float free as I don't want them. If I use the unlimited limpet I pick up stuff I don't want and if it picks up the Phase Alloys I might fill my Mats before I get the Chem Manips and have to start dumping, not a big deal but selecting one is better. IMO.
