Limpets as Ammunition?

Just something that occurred to me...

If I'm flying a ship with, say, Cannons fitted, I buy ammunition for them, the ammo' gets loaded into the weapons and, importantly, that ammunition stays with the ship.
If I swap to a ship that has no Cannons, I don't have to sell all my Cannon ammo' before I can use the new ship.
The ammo, as I said, simply remains aboard the ship that has the Cannons.

Can we not have limpets that work this way too?
Why can't limpets just be "ammunition" for Limpet Controllers?

I get that it's mean we no longer need cargo racks to store limpets but that isn't a big deal.
I get that it'd also mean there's be no containers of limpets to scoop either but, so what?
The cost of limpets can remain the same and the cost of synth'ing them could remain the same too (extortionate though it is compared to the cost of synth'ing, say, missiles).

The only differences would be no more need for cargo racks to store limpets and no faff of buying/selling limpets every time you swap ships.

I don't see a down-side to this.

In my eyes, there's only one case, where i think that the current limpets as cargo have a bit of a point: it limits their number, so people can't fire hundreds of hatch breakers. But a reasonable ammo count would serve that purpose just as well.

For about anything else, limpet count doesn't matter too much. I mean, for example you go mining. It's not the number of limpets you bring which limits you, it's your full cargo hold which sends you back to go sell.

So all in all, i'd also like this change.

I like this suggestion. I was just about to post something about being able to sell limpets back to a station, instead of having to jettison some, if you're switching to a ship that has less cargo space than your current ship has limpets.

This would solve that. If that's how it used to work, I'd be happy is they switched back to that.

And how/why is this not the way all cargo/munitions/limpets work?

Passengers, sure, they should go with you so you cant leave them on a ship you switch out of, no matter how fun that sounds...but any sort of cargo. In fact, now that I'm thinking of it, you should also be able to then transfer cargo/limpets/munitions between ships...maybe you'd have to be at the same station as the ship you're doing the operation with.

I think it fine the way it is. It comes down to risk vs reward. We also gain an extra module slot on each ship. Like if I farming Mats. My ship not going to be so OP.

I have suggested numerous times that we change limpet controllers to limpet bays, where the bay is both controller and limpet storage; the number of limpets would be determined by size of the module slot. It's simply the best and most elegant implementation option for limpets.

+1

my 5 cent:
  1. More logical size of limpet controllers, like size 1 controlls 1 limpet, size 3 (4 times the mass) controlls 4 (and not 2).
  2. Limpet controllers include a small limpet bay, possibly the identical to the max number of limpets controlled. Miners still fill 50% of their cargo with limpets but perhaps 1 repair limpet for emergencies is enough.
