Limpets : One Time Love Affair?

So I tried using Mining Limpets a few weeks ago, and each limpet seems to beetle back and forth picking up as many chunks as it can... and then it expires.

Today I tried Collector Limpets (different ship, and it's possible these limpets and their controller are the same as for mining), and used them to collect Materials after I won a combat against an NPC. First, it seemed I had to target a Material and then fire/launch the limpet. The limpet quickly brought back the item but then the limpet immediately expired, and I had to launch a fresh limpet to collect material #2. For eight Materials I was able to use my four limpets to automatically collect four, and had to use traditional cargo scooping for the rest.

Is that 'as intended' and it's one limpet to collect one Material? Whereas in Mining teach limpet gets busy and collects as many mining chunks as it can, before some expiry timer ends their activity?

TIA

This is as intended, yes.

If you have something targeted it retrieves it then expires. With nothing targeted it grabs whatever is closest and returns it, then heads out again.

It can be handy if you only want to grab a specific item, like for a mission or to avoid illegal stuff.

Don't target the Materials.

Just be within the Limpet max range.
Fly towards the Materials without targeting them and the Limpets will spring into life.

It will work the same as Mining.

It is intended that a limpet will self destruct if you launch it at a targeted item. But, you don't need to target 'Materials' for the limpet to gather them. You just need to deploy a collection limpet, and it will gather everything in range. You can also teach your limpets to ignore certain items. But, I'm not experienced in that feature. I scoop manually, myself.

Thanks all for the quick replies. That makes sense (not to target the Materials). Thinking back to Mining a few weeks ago, I shot the chunks off the 'roid but never targetted any. Will give this a go with Mats after my next combat. Post v3.0 I'm now back collecting Mats again, with the increased caps, and scooping individually gets tiring.
