Linear missions and story arcs.

Hello.

One of the questions I ask myself in elite, is what now? New players login for the first time and then what?

What about a few umm traditional story campaigns within the game? A 30 mission story arc.

They can be centered on a single station.
The missions could be progressive.
The player rewarded with ship part upgrades and credits.
At the end of the story arc/missions the player rewarded with an A rated sidewinder, that can be named. A decal with a one off name of your sidewinder on it.

It would feel quite good to have a named sidewinder in the garage. At the moment the only sense of progession is getting enough credits to get a bigger ship.

A few story arcs/missions with some unique feeling rewards would capture a lot of interest. And the Galaxy is large enough to have story arcs/missions set on a single station/planets without disrupting the over all game play etc.

This could be expanded on, for instance there could be a 30 mission story arc for each of the main ranks. Combat, trader, explorer. At the end of which the rewards could be a sidewinder, hauler and Adder.

Would not need to be a starting thing for new players either. I am sure most players would appreciate a 30 mission story arc which resulted in a named ship at the end.

No, thanks.

Elite is not a theme-park game, where you get to relive pre-made adventures. It's about writing your own story and finding your own adventure, and not about being funneled through a pre-scripted campaign. There's nothing "unique" about rewards that every player earns when playing through the same missions. See it like this: Luke Skywalker means nothing in a universe filled with thousand other Luke Skywalkers that all flew thousand same attacks on thousand same Death Stars.

I am not suggesting the entire elite universe be condensed into a single player 30 mission only game.

I am suggesting adding a story/mission arc to a few locations. Instead of being given a sidewinder and 1000 credits, you can play through a pre scripted story arc instead to earn the sidewinder.

This could have the potential to introduce the sand pit to gamers that do prefer working their way through stories. After all there are 1 or 2 elite novels that people enjoy reading.

It can be used to introduce the different gaming aspects of elite to players. There are lots of different ways it can be used.

And the impact to the make your own story? There is none. At the end of it you have a starting ship and a galaxy to explore, if you so choose to do so.

It could even be introduced as dlc.

That changes nothing to my criticism. You still put all the players on an identical roller-coaster ride to produce a line of identical Heroes of Freeholm or whatever storyline you want to follow.

It is to add diversity and options for players. It is not to force players down a single path. If someone prefers to skip the story arc and go straight for the sidewinder and credits. They should be able to, if someone wants to follow and experience a story for the same result, they should be able to. If existing players want to experience the same thing, they should be able to.

I think that level of identical roller coaster ride exists in game now. There are the same missions in the star bases the same bounty hunting/trading etc. Only difference is I need to imagine a story, Instead of experiencing a story.

There should be room for both.

Identical story arcs to follow for all players is the exact opposite of "diversity".

Only if every player is forced to follow them. Which is not what I am suggesting.

It could even be implemented via dlc. The Walden story/mission arcs. The Jacques story/mission arc. There is a lot of elite history and stories that could be experienced in game, using the existing mission functionality.
