Link sensor grade to gimbal efficency

This is a slight reminder to FD that this change would give higher grade sensors more of a role to play and add more depth to outfitting a ship.

It could be that class determines features- example B rated being less prone to chaff or experimental sensor spoofing (at the cost of weight).

I'd go a step further and have gimbal jitter related to ship signature, which is affect by sensor grade, emissive rounds, and range to target, but also by the ship you're targeting. In other words, cooler, stealthier ships should induce more jitter when targeted.

Then again, my ship is so stealthy that you'll never get a lock on it, LOL ;)

This sounds unfair. What if I'm poor newbie and have no money for A rated sensors. Why should I suffer even more?..

Agree, makes sense, even by today standards, such technology is used to acquire target locks more efficiently & defeat counter measures.

You couldn't make the same argument for power plants, shields etc?

I can make. Let overcharged power plant shake. With the hull. Which will add more jitter to all weapons. Sounds legit, right?

If i was a newbie, i'd be more concerned with the steep climb/grind via engineering then i would being able to purchase better modules. Engineering is a bigger problem for newbies imo. Have a friend whom gleefully bought the game not to long ago to use with his VR, making money to buy modules weren't a problem, but now his realizing to take part competitively in PvP, his ship is grossly outclassed & isn't patient enough to grind hours/days into collecting materials just to be able to go round pew pew-ing other players. If i could grind it for him i would, but i can't see how giving sensors a bit more kick to them that can be bought is going to hurt newbies.

imo if ED want to attract more players & retain them, it needs to not get too heavy handed with the grind. Instead focus on PowerPlay/Realm V Realm, with the grind being something you do in between for rebuys etc.

I think this was proposed by Sandro a few years ago and loads of people flipped out about it. EDIT: here
I think its a great idea.

I think it was one of the Mikes actually. The idea was that A sensors would give you the same performance as you had now, but the lower the grade the range at which the gimbals would lock on would reduce.

This is really interesting, sensors right now have only a range value, they really could have much more like:

  • range (of course)
  • sensitivity (the minimum temperature they can read another ship at a certain distance)
  • gimbal range (same as sensitivity, but for aiming)
  • gimbal precision (the intrinsic jitter a gimballed weapon have considering distance and sensitivity)

This could open room to a wide range of new engineering, like shorter range sensors specialised for cooler ships etc. Let's hope fdev will check on this, it could be interesting if well balanced.

As a noob, you will only be flying against similar specced NPCs and if you are going against other players as a noob, you will be mincemeat anyway.

They experimented with this before but there was a big backlash against it and the idea was dropped.

Personally I liked the idea.

You should be able to “go active”, which acts like turning your wing beacon on for everyone in the instance and surrounding few megameters, as well as making gimbals, turrets, missiles, etc. more accurate against you, but lets you see silent running ships much more effectively.

Like the idea. A-rated should be better than current tracking, B or C grade about the same. BUT needs to be combined with a reduction of the frankly ridiculous sensor mass for larger sizes so that we can actually fit A-grade without slowing to a crawl.

Makes sense. To hit, the gimbals need to target, to target you need sensors and the better the sensors the aiming should be better.

I support this.
