Linus looks at Pimax 8k

Notice that Linus hints at the fact that running the 5k version at native resolution might be a better option than the upscaled "8k" version. Interesting.

Interesting, his report was a bit like my old School reports. "He is doing well but has quite a way to go to achieve his required results" :)

Also interesting to hear Linus say that he does not think they will meet their early next year (Jan/Feb) delivery dates!! That will disappoint a few eager beavers on this forum alone.

I have backed the Pimax 8k recently. They are having problems hitting 90 Hz and they don't know why. All of the parts they use are 90Hz certified but there seem to be some lingering compatibility issues... They had currently verified 82Hz on the Mk3 concept last week and say that 85 is currently under test... They also say that they want to release 5 concepts before the final build.

The Mk.2 which Linus tested was rumoured to be running at about 75 which even with just 100° FOV is the absolute minimum. And you know it's going to be an issue when a battle hardened VR soldier like Linus lasts a mere 5 minutes.
Knowing that wider FOVs exacerbate dizziness issues, 90 is really a bare necessity rather than icing on the cake...

I'm sure that future HMDs by other manufacturers are going to be pushing 120 or even 144Hz in the quest for a silky smooth experience.

Still as a cockpit experience, ED should be fine @85Hz if the positional low pass filtering is not too extreme. SRV might be a stretch, though. That can be a barf fest at the best of times.

edit-

I, personally would be far happier for them to miss the deadline even by an entire quarter if it means they'll deliver a quality product... But then I backed SC, so I know what the word SOON™ means.

I'm wonder why he is using laptop for test ? Did he mention someting about laptop spec ? What about Pimax supersampling and other in game settings ? Did he run any FPS benchmark ? He played SPT a while like an amatour, his review brings nothing on the table..
And he got this unit to home ! What a waste of resources... :D

I think, but have no source for this, is that the Laptop is Pimax and this is what they have been using on all their demo's. I also get the impression from what he says is that he had a Pimax agent/employer/someone there as he said they 'Flew over'!!

If this Laptop is from Pimax, i also assume that they would be running EVERYTHING they could to make the thing work it's best.

You have your opinions of him, but he averages over 1/2 a million views on his YT, and is thought of (Although not by you) as one of the better reviewers on YT, but each to there own! One thing he does do well, he tells it like it is and cannot be bought by manufactures throwing IT goodies at him.

"I can easily spend an hour in vr"
He's adorable.

Call me when you take a break after a five hour ED session and spend it playing doom reskinned in vr..

Sorry, I do not like this guy.
It's not about new tech, it's all about Linus himself.
And Yes I am a pimax backer.
This review has zero value for me.

I am not a VR Specialist but i know what is good or bad or run of the mill. I suspect he does as well.
Love the way some of the backers are saying this has zero....... dont suppose paying out all that money you are going to say he is right HaHa

Third reread, and I’m still not entirely sure what you’re getting at. Everybody dies. That bit you got right.

If you are a Pimax backer then of course this review has zero value to you. The review is for people like me who are interested in the headset and want to hear the opinions of people who play a lot of VR. I'm a little concerned about what he said about smearing, that it was more visible with bright objects on a black background... which is a description of Elite.

But I really don't understand why you are so down on the review. He said that after trying such a wide field of view he'd now find it difficult to recommend a headset with a narrow field of view like the VIVE or the CV1.

Personally I always knew that the CV1 would not be my last headset, but I don't have tonnes of money to shell out. I'll be happy enough with my headset for the moment, and I intend to buy a 1080 on Black Friday so's I can do a bit of supersampling to help the resolution. My problem isn't just the cost of buying a new headset, it's the hardware to feed it fast enough. I'll be waiting until the Pimax 8K is released on general sale before I even think of buying one. And hopefully someone will bring one to an Elite Meeting so I can see for myself whether there's image distortion or screen smearing.
