Lion Redo

I agree. It's not even that it's cartoony, it's that the style of the lion and the other carnivorans contrasts too greatly with the other animals in the game. I think this is further punctuated by the new clouded leopard which is pretty realistic despite being a bit dolled up.

I think it was already confirmed that they won't update it which is sad because they seem to have become better at creating realistic looking Animals. The Mane looks so weird 🙁
Maybe I would keep Lions more often in my Zoos if they would find a Way to fix it.

Would be nice if they could also fix it that the West African Lion is called Barbary Lion in the Tutorial even though they are different Subspecies. It's really misleading.

Are West African Lions even currently kept in any Zoos? They are at least not kept in EAZA Zoos

Technically yes... if you take into account that the many Lion subspecies--thanks to genetic evidence--have been merged into two... now all Lions from the western and northern parts of Africa and the Asiatic Lion are considered the same subspecies...

Wasn't it like that for Tigers too and then it somehow turned out that there are indeed more than 2 Subspecies? 😂

Yeah lions and tigers got largely lumped.
Siberian and Bengal tigers are lumped under the same scientific name for example.
Barbary lions are now just a different population under Panthera leo leo
But that's still highly debatable, as a lot of things in taxonomy. For the Tigers there's a more recent paper that says that, based on morphological and genetic evidence, it still makes more sense to keep the six extant subspecies. I'm not sure about the lions, but there are some major morphological differences.
And I really hope the lions will get a refurbishment, also the chimpanzees could use one.

I personally feel the apes got pretty good treatment, especially as when the game was announced, I expected them to be the weakest models.

I think all the carnivorans could use some work, ESPECIALLY the cats and bears (grizzly especially) but the lion is #1

Also, I'd rename it the Southern lion since there are now only 2 lion subspecies and the one in PZ looks more like that than the Northern race.

So, some of you may know that I usually make a megathread after each major update for smaller scale changes the dev team can add to the game that would nonetheless affect gameplay in a good way. I think at some point, probably after the next two dlcs after this one, I'm going to discontinue that list and make a new one regarding TLC for animals that I think they could touch up. You can see a decent difference in quality with some of the earliest animals they did (like the lion) compared to were they are now in terms of skill.

There's nothing wrong with that, in fact it's great that animal quality is getting better. I would just like to see them go back and fix up some of the OG animals once the game's lifecycle is winding down a bit, and the lion is one of them.

I am with you on this one. And I don't think they have to change a lot of the models at that. There's but a few in my opinion

They aren't different subspecies. There are only two subspecies of lion - Panthera leo leo, the northern lion, which includes the West African, Barbary, and Asiatic subpopulations, and Panthera leo melanochaita, the southern lion, which includes subpopulations such as the Katanga, Southern African, and Masai lions. The issue is that Frontier has never been clear on how they are taxonomically separating their animals. The tigers, for example, both belong to the same subspecies as well (Panthera tigris tigris) but include two subpopulations (the Siberian and Bengal).

I wonder if model variation would be possible. Not just for lion manes but anything with horns, antlers, tusks, etc.
I think it would be possible. If I remember correctly the Aurochs Remake from Jagged Fangs Designs for Zoo Tycoon 2 had multiple possible Body Types. Of course it's not the same Engine but I'm sure if they can do it, Frontier could find a Way too
