I am used to listening to my own music in the background whilst playing. Since this update dropped, it seems other applications get muted when Elite starts, and cannot be unmuted until the game ends. Has anybody else had this issue?

Problem stopped after reset of computer, so if anyone else updated and got this issue, do the same 
No, sorry. Mine works - I can listen to music or youtube videos while playing just like before.
I'm under Win7 and I'm not using the standard drivers, though. I have a USB D/A converter and 7.1 headphones. So maybe it's a windows thing?

I never saw this. Which is just as well. I listen to either youtube videos in the background, or Yahtzee and Gabe's Let's Drown Out series .
Though I do have an itunes playlist for ED too, mostly made of music from Homeworld 2, Emperor: Battle for Dune, and Dune 2000.
Exploring/fighting in vast empty desert, exploring/fighting in vast empty space - the soundtrack fits both.
