General / Off-Topic Live-Action Cowboy Bebop on Netflix

The show was shot in Auckland, New Zealand during the COVID pandemic's first rounds here. I'm watching it just for that; if I wanted Cowboy Bepop, I'd pull out my old DVD set and watch it off there. My wife lived in Auckland for a while and we are having some fun trying to fish out the settings among all the CGI overlays.

So far so good! Pretty faithful to the anime in general, if not scene-by-scene. I'm surprised to so far only have Ed mentioned, but at least Ein gets some screen-time and who doesn't love corgis. Music is delightful, but I have yet to hear a bad soundtrack from Yoko Kanno and Bebop is one of her best.

:D S

Seems Ein was played by 2 dogs, named Charles and Harry. UK readers will make the connection instantly, but it took me a few seconds.

Since Corgis are from Wales, that is apropos.

I only started watching the animated series a couple weeks ago.
I too am enjoying the live action show. Star Trek dude has the poses down pat (lounging on the couch, etc).

Finished watching this yesterday. I like the anime, wouldn't say I am massive fan, but it's good, however this 'adaptation', though I think it looks okay, it does a pretty bad job of both the characters and stories it's sourced (butchered?) from. I would probably have been more accepting if it had been an 'in universe' spin-off (with a different, totally new bunch of characters), but knowing what they have wasted to make this makes me sad.

see you space cowboy...

While I like anime CB is one I haven't ever had the time to sit down and watch. I am going to try and watch the live action version because I feel that the majority of the negativity for this show stems from comparing it to the original. I did the same with avatar as well. Never watched the show; but I enjoyed the movie because I had nothing to compare it too.

First off the animated series is a true work of art, and any adaptation should at best be a homage to the original and take inspiration from it.

If you have never seen the original, please do watch the live action version first. You will enjoy it I’m sure. The acting is relatively good, the design not so bad. But then please go see the anime and you’ll be blown away by how superior it is over the live action version.

Overall the beat of the live action is off completely, it is overly long and lacks wit, charm and weirdness. It looks staged and off kilter, as though shot by someone who had not seen 5 seconds of the source material. It looks ‘sanitised’.

‘Cowboy Bebop’ Canceled by Netflix After One Season

That was fast: Netflix has canceled its ambitious, widely hyped and, ultimately, widely disappointing anime adaptation Cowboy Bebop, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The move comes less than three weeks after the show’s Nov. 19 debut on the streaming service.
Yes; that was fast....

Ehh, it's better than most shows. I can't believe it's throwing that rubbish Manifest another season but cancelling Bebop, really just put the money from that into a second season. :p

I binged on the Netflix Cowboy Bebop episodes and for me it was so-so. Then again I'm an old guy and my appreciation of weird is probably different than a much younger person's weird. In either case if enough don't watch it then Netflix moves on. This from a company started in Scotts Valley, CA in 1997 sending movie DVDs to customers in the mail. Today they pay to air more movies and TV series in one year than ABC, NBC, and CBS ever did in 5 years.

The result? Probably a lot of crap but then they give aspiring artists a chance. The result is that they get more winners that the world loves to watch. We customers get to choose.

For me the Guardians of the Galaxy movies was great being weird for the younger generations while being older I could sing along with all the old tunes! Well the second one got into special effects and a boring typical Hollywood script. Did Netflix ever show them? Not sure. But Amazom Prime would be happy to rent or sell them to you. No thanks unless I can download it to my hard drive.

I finished Beebop yesterday and I enjoyed it. The offbeat style was unique and different. I really think the hate the show got was because everyone was comparing it to the anime. I've never watched the anime so judging it on it's own merits I liked it.
