Living Breathing Universe

Hi,

Haven't logged into ED for a while (since 2015). Just wondering how is the immersion coming along?

Is it getting towards a living breathing universe? Do the missions lead on to another with twists and turns to allow you become a double agent i.e. accept a mission to assassinate someone then take a bribe let him go and take some data back to the client that shows you killed him take on more missions from the client whilst working for the other side, then go to the cops and turn them both in. I want to be able create my own story just need the tools.

Have they fixed plaver to player comms so can hail someone using a headset. Last time I talked to another human player we had to type:) FDEV not seen Star Trek...

A lot has changed but there's still loads to be done.

Wings & comms work better now!

Players groups and factions are around if you find them but no proper guild or group system is in place yet.

AI and combat has had massive improvements.

Background sim wise if you work for minor factions doing missions, trading, mining and other jobs you can help them to expand in a system and try to move into others.

Generally the games much more polish but there's still a lot that needs to be added and I find I play for a couple of weeks then take a break! Frontier are doing a pretty good job but we're years from a finished product and the game that was pitched at kick starter.

I'm a double agent. I'm a Federal Vice Admiral and an Imperial Count. And I'm pledged to Yuri Grom - I'm a triple agent.

It all kinda makes no sense.

Sense is the only thing we as Players are asked to give the game. Frontier does only the programming.

With games being called more "realistic" we have given up our ability to use our Imagination. Games haven't become more realistic. That's just the Impression left by fancier gaphics. They shouldn't be called realistic in the first place. They are just fancier.

The galaxy does feel like it has a bit more going on in it now. It's not quite there just yet, as we have a lot of stuff like space bars and other stations that are just sitting around doing nothing but looking pretty at the moment, but it's getting better.

It's just simple things like team up with a couple of players buy up scarce resources from a planet that needs it, hoping to drive the price up even more then buying lots of the stuff from other markets then selling it back at higher price once the market has moved in our favour. The background simulation needs to be in place and you the need the tools to see demand/supply (depth to the market) and how much is being supplied/bought with respect to time (in graph form). That would show you how big a pool of players and financial backing you need. All I want is FDEV to provide the tools I'll make the story...

Dude,

no, none of that, if you want that level of graphing go and play Eve.

ED is not the game for you.

You click on a price and it shows you price and demand variations. I don't want spreadsheet on spreadsheets.

These are just an illustrations. Background Simulation (BGS) and tools need to be in place for the players to create game-play and a rich universe. FDEV can't hand-craft content.

With regard to your assertion that Elite is not for me, I take exception. I played Elite (Messrs Bell & Braben) since the C64 release, I believe I know what game Elite/Frontier series are. Don't be so judgemental.

ED has come a long way. There's big improvements regarding BGS, NPC spawning according to system background information. It certainly feels more consistent and alive. And ohh Thargoids are here.

As for your story such complexity for missions aren't there yet, however mission chains and missions with variations (called wrinkles) are available. You can also transport passengers.

As for mission 'story' element improving I am really looking forward post 2.4 core updates.

Why not just fire it up and try it?

In your OP you stated you havent played since 2015.

If you want to see if ED is for you then start the game.

If you want to whinge about something, write a post on this forums.

i bet you 50p that you wont like Elite Dangerous because you stopped playing it 2 years ago and cant be bothered to investigate the updates since then for yourself.

I will be updating and firing up the game as we move to winter. If you followed ED development you would have seen that it was never FDEVS intention to deliver the complete game on day 1. It will come through updates over a long period of time. I'm patient enough to wait till it hits a certain level, till then I will continue investing in EDs development via the seasons etc...I'm in it for the long-haul.

POST EDIT
If you look at planetary landings David Braben has mentioned that they want there to be vegetation, animals and cities but can't expect that straight away. They don't have the resources of Cloud Imperium Games and it is an incredible amount of work. Look at how long it takes GTA to be built and the cost. FDEV have far fewer resources so you just have to be patient.
