"Loading Simulation" will be the death of me...

Hey all,

I need to leave the system NOW. No ifs, no buts, NOW! I open the Galaxy map, select a system. Open system map, select a station. All done in a couple of seconds. It's quick, I've practised this. I click to exit the System Map, I click to exit the Galaxy Map... "Loading Simulation" I click again, "Still Loading Simulation". About 14 weeks go by (it feels like that, likely 14 seconds in fact) and FINALLY, the "Loading Simulation" message vanished and clicking to Exit the map actually exits the darn map. I can then align and jump. Luckily I'd deployed a heat sink before entering in the map and I'd stayed cold, that likely saved me this time... I had a heat sink left.

When I click to Exit the map, I don't want you to load anything, just EXIT THE DARN MAP. Please. Lol.

Has anyone else gotten frustrated by this when you've quickly selected a destination and then had to wait up to 20 second (extreme example) for this "Loading Simulation" message to clear? What's to load? I've done what I needed to do, I want to LEAVE the map screen now. Note: that "Loading Simulation" can happen on both Galaxy and Sector maps, even after you've selected a destination. So, the map works, job done, it just won't let you leave yet.

Just had to flee from a large amount of Thargoids that jumped in right on top of me. I was already beaten up having just taken out one of those Scythe super-fast things, while under attack from several Scouts and a swarm from a nearby Interceptor. I finished off the Scythe - it was ripping through local AI AX ships, no other Commanders in sight - but I had to go as hull was low.

so in this case, I would open the galaxy map (key 7 for me), then click to system map, select station, then hit (key no 4 for me) select system map bound key to exit everything without having to backtrack.

I believe you can exit via a quick key and it does not suffer this issue. It only seems to happen to me when you hit the on screen exit button.

I wasn't aware there was a shortcut key, I'll try that next time I'm in. Are those default bindings you're using, or have you changed something? I'm usually navigating with the stick and/or mouse, so have never touched (or changed) any of the default KB bindings.

you have to set them up in options. I use the number pad on the keyboard for these (4 and 7) as its convenient for me. (they may be default bound elsewhere but I have used these for so long now I would not remember anywhere else...)

I’m not sure if this works with the “Loading simulation” stuff, but if my game gets stuck trying to open the system or galaxy map (be that because the connection has decided to go on the wonk in that moment or server related), I tend to just hit the “Pause” button which automatically pulls me back to the ship’s controls.

May be a workaround here too, if it works.

Oh, so just hit the "Pause" button on the keyboard to force me back to cockpit view? I'll try that next time it happens. Never think of pressing Pause for any reason, considering the nature of the game lol.

It does for me, can't remember exactly why I ended up doing it or figuring out that hitting pause forces the system/galaxy map to close.

But in some cases it can be a useful workaround to have.

You can bind a key or button for each of the maps that same button will exit them, mine are bound to “m” and “,”.

I do wish people would not use the term pause button it gives new players the false idea you can pause the game.

Menu button springs to mind immediately, as the one thing it does is take you to the menu.
I suppose that is a good idea, the reflex is just to refer to it as the pause menu because you hit the pause button to get there. For me, anyway.

I would love to know why you can exit the Apex screen while it's loading the sysmap but you can't when you're just looking at it yourself. 🤷‍♂️

Once upon a time, to load Elite Dangerous from cassette tape, I would start loading (playing the cassette) whilst I ate my fish fingers, alphabites and beans… it probably wasn’t fully loaded even after that.

We’re becoming far too impatient and want everything now.

o7 “Please remove cassette, turn over and play side 2 to continue loading.”

I wish FD would implement something like my idea for a pseudo-pause button.

When a phone or doorbell rings I just press the button and the game takes these actions:-
Open the exit menu.
Select "quit to main menu".
Wait 15 seconds.
And this is the clever bit: automatically reply "yes", because I'm already AFK talking to someone. :)
