Newcomer / Intro Locking into a starport while wanted

Hi, I'm new here.

Things have been going pretty well for me. I played for several days without dying once. Today, statistics caught up with me and saw to it that my noobishness would see himself killed. What happened is that I made the mistake of attacking a transport that was clean. I though that would be OK as I was in an independent system. That was a mistake, independent is not the same as anarchy, it seems. I got a small bounty on my head, and some useless cans of algae the transport left behind. I couldn't even pick them up, as my cargo was already full (I had forgotten about that before initiating my piracy act).

I decided I would get back on the right side of the law and clear my bounty. The system had no outposts, so I had to take my chances through security and dock quickly. I left super-cruise coming from the planet side, which presented me neatly facing the entrance of the station. I went full thrusters, engaged silent running and requested docking.

I made it into the letter-box entrance without being scanned, but to my horror I got a warning about loitering, and had 20s to get out. Which I did, panicked. I don't know if my grant request had been accepted by the time I entered. I'm pretty sure I did not hear it being denied.

Outside of the station, a ship initiated a scan, bad news for me. I went back into the station, possibly before the scan completed, but I'm not sure. Back inside in the station, I was instantaneously destroyed, it went so fast I never even heard the shots.

So what did I do wrong? Why did the station accuse me of loitering when I first entered? Is it illegal to enter a station when you are wanted in that system? Or was my problem due to entering to quickly, before my docking request was granted?

Never enter a station if you are wanted by the faction that owns the station. You will have to clear your wanted status from a station that isn't on the lookout for you, which is denoted in the system view.

Outposts should not have security flying around. Your bounty is probably with the federation, so dock with a federation outpost to clear it. I don't think bounties are with minor factions. Reserve the wanted spaceport docking for when you are trying to behave like a pro :)

A fine is probably with the minor faction or the system, but that does not make you wanted until it has expired. And I guess alliance/empire work the same as federation.

Thanks for the answers, but I'm getting some conflicting information, I think. I need to clear up a couple of things:

1) If I commit a (minor: shooting at someone, but not killing) crime in an independent system, where will I be wanted?

2) Is it possible to pay up bounties at places that are not under the control of the people who want me?

Yes, you will be wanted... But in THAT system. Anyone with a KW scanner will see that wanted status as well. Can't answer the second question. Every time I get a fine, I pay it off immediately... Insurance currently at 1.6 mil is a bit of pill to swallow...

Bounties can be payed anywhere you like as they are handled by the pilots federation. Fines (which won't see you blown up) have to be payed at the issuing system.
