Logging off in space (non combat)

I've read about logging off during PVP combat in open mode getting punishment for that but does it count against you if it's non combat solo mode as sometimes I find myself having to log out while mining (before the jump please read), now I leave the asteroid field before logging off so i'm not cheating as it were (I think they fixed that anyway), but sometimes I have to leave because of RL, does FD look badly upon logging off during non combat, out of the asteroid field type logging off?

As long as you log out via the game menu, you can log out whenever you want... including in the middle of combat. Whether or not your ship will survive the 15 seconds of combat while you wait for the timer is a different story...

If you force the game to close (bypassing that waiting period), I don't think it matters whether you are in Open, Group, or Solo... or if it's because you were trying to avoid destruction, or simply because RL makes you step away from the game. Say, if your boss steps into your cubicle :D

No, you can leave in space anytime you like as long as you aren't in imminent danger (a window pops up when you are).

NEVER log off in an Astroid belt or a RES or around anything solid other than space stations. When you log back in you might randomly spawn inside one of those structures and suffer instant death. Always get well away from such things before logging out.

Though if you do you will be cheating whether your ship is destroyed during the timeout or not.

that's debatable.
the 15 second timer was introduced for exactly that reason. FD could have made it 30 seconds... or even impossible to log out this way while in combat.
they didn't.
so we have to assume they think 15 seconds are enough disencouragement to do it.

Not according to Sandro.

Hello Commanders!

This is a quick update to let you guys know what we’re looking at regarding the issue of “combat logging”.

For clarity’s sake, “combat logging” is when a Commander ungracefully exits the game (e.g. using ALT + F4 then shutting down the game process) to avoid defeat, destruction and damage. ...
