Newcomer / Intro Logitech Extreme 3D Pro and Elite Dangerous

Hey all! I'm not a newcomer, but I think this question is better suited in here for any future newcomers.

Do any of you use the 3D Pro in Elite? If so, do you have any tips or suggestions to help make the experience better? I've had such a difficult time using this in combination with keyboard & mouse controls, and I'm considering just going back to everything being on k+m.

What do you all think?

Map a convenient key on the keyboard as a shift key. The hat on its own will be pip management. CTRL+hat will switch panels - e.g CTRL+hat left will switch to the navigation panel, CTRL+hat up will switch to comms, etc.

Map a shift key for the four buttons on the crown of the stick too. This will give you 8 further functions available without taking your hand away from the keyboard (like button 1 is your chaff trigger; CTRL+button 1 is shield cells. Buttons 2 and 3 are different functions from CTRL+2 and +3, etc.

The buttons on the base of the stick are inconvenient for any function related to combat. I use the base buttons on my T16000.M for landing gear, cargo scoop, night vision, firegroups and switching between combat and analysis mode.

The throttle is about as useful as a chocolate fireguard. I set it to sensor zoom. Map throttle to the keyboard - 0%, 50%, 75% and 100% throttle are all you really need. Map a shift key for reverse thrust if you need to. You could also get used to W and S for throttle.

Consider buying a wee wireless number pad - they're cheap and you can map a ton of functions to the 10 keys, doubling them up with a shift key.

Wow, this is great! Thank you so much!

I use one of these too. Although, to be fair, mainly in ship-to-ship combat. I'm ainly on KB+M.

As @the100thmonkey says, the hat is pips. I use the two buttons to the left to select next/previous target, and the ones to the right for moving through fire groups. The only other two I use are the primary fire under the index finger and secondary fire under the thumb when holding the stick.

Yaw is stick twist. The other axes are pretty much standard.

The buttons on the base are, for me, unused although I did map some to... stuff... but they're pretty much superfluous.

So, do you use keyboard for throttle then?

I use the 3d pro. I use the throttle and all the buttons. The throttle is very useful for srv and camera operation. I also have key bindings for 100% 75% 50 % reverse and stop. I also use all the stick buttons and hat. When I first started it took a while to get the bindings the way I wanted them. It was worth the time and effort. I made little post-it pictures to show what all the buttons do until I got familiar with the lay out. The throttle was the trickiest, forward and reverse for the srv and camera, just fwd for the ship. I don't do combat so i don't need reverse very often. if you can position the unit centered on your body and screen it makes the buttons and throttle much easier to use. Spending the time to set it up is really worth it. Fly Dangerous 07
