Newcomer / Intro Logitech Extreme 3D Pro button names and assignments?

Hello,
I'm just getting started with the first missions, and setting up the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro joystick. Seems the Thrust lever is named U-Axis in game? I can't find any reference to that name anywhere. Also, when I try to map the thrust lever, If I push it up to the plus sign, it doesn't register in the assignment until I push it back down to the minus sign, and then it says -Joy U-Axis. Going the other way it's named +Joy U-Axis. Am I doing something wrong? Does anyone use the thrust lever as the forward and back thrust in-game? In the first mission using the lever felt weird and did not seem to respond very well.

Any help is appreciated.

When I assigned joy commands to pitch and roll, they didn't "take" until the stick was returned to the "neuteal" position. Is this similat to what you are seeing? If so, I'd hazard at guess at it being normal behaviour.

However, I'm far from being an expert so take with a pinch of salt...

Personally, I use the stick for steering and a keyboard for thrust. I have inverted the pitch axis so that pushing the stick forward results in a "dive". Just my preference.

This is how I used mine for ELITE :

It's easily possible to assign the Throttle to a wrong bind (i.e. Digital Input or single-axis only). The "name" of the axis will be displayed in the Settings once assigned anywhere - but the name is irrelevant.
Memorizing which assigned axis does what is all you'll ever need, same basically valid for Buttons ("Joy 1 - Joy 10" for example).

You'll want to assign the Analog Throttle to "Flight Throttle -> Throttle Axis".
Should you already have it assigned elsewhere, you might want to remove these unneeded double-bindings (choose Assign, then press ESC, that'll remove the binding) in order to prevent undesired multi-Inputs.

Getting comfy with the Controls will take some time, but the Tutorials are great to getting a hang of it fairly quickly.
Since nothing can be lost in the tutorials (doesn't affect the main game, just a Simulator) one can fool around with the Controls without having to care to complete the Tutorial Mission or anything.

I also use the X3D Pro..

I have all the various thrusts bound to the KeyPad and I also have all of them as Voice Attack Macros.

I have disabled the analog throttle because I want to exit HyperSpace at 5% speed so I am not a sitting duck for interdiction before I start scooping fuel.
As the DEV's have things currently set up, the analog controls override the digital controls as soon as you enter either supercruise or hyperspace. Not too big a deal going into supercruise, but BIG BIG deal going into hyperspace because if you forget to "throttle back" while in hyperspace, you will exit pointing straight at a star at the 75% plus speed you needed to get the drive to go into hyperdrive. Not a good thing.
