Hardware & Technical Logitech G13 Advanced Gameboard

I own one...but never tried it with ED (only using it with WoW and sort of).
The "Thumb stick" is not precise enough for ED.
It might be nice for left hand when using a joysick with it at the right.

Yeah,

I was planning on using it in my left for all the keyboard commands and the thumbstick for thrusters then using a real Joystick in my right hand for flying and shooting.

I use the thumbstick on the G13 for WASD (or better QEWS) since years in alot of games. For general movement in MMO's or other third-person and some first person games it is about perfect in combination with a mouse for mouse-look. I am just not too sure if it would work well as the main control in a simulation game like ED.

But yes, the thumbstick would be more than ok for the thrusters and/or yaw

I ordered one last week, too. I'll probably map the stick on it for looking while dedicating the hat on my actual joystick for translation thrusters. We'll see how Elite takes to the added input option.

might work good.
tell us how you're doing with it. :)
progammable keys work great for preconfigured energy settings (using VA for that).

I'm hoping I can map all the keys by just pressing them just like I did with my ps3 controller in the controller set up options. I'm not sure if the display could be utilised for anything. I plan on mounting the joystick and the gameboard on a lump of wood
I will write a full review to let you know how it all turns out.

Just started using one

Hi, AdmiralDave!

I was trying to look for answers for the usage of one of these G13 Gameboards as well because a friend lent his one to me to try it out for a few days.

It is really fiddling around with it. My vision for the ultimate setup for my Elite dangerous would be, The gameboard for use with in-flight functions and UI only, thruster and joystick for flight controls.

But to answer your question, have I tied it down with ED? the answer is yes. I managed so not too long ago. On one hand you cannot include the G13 gameboard in the game's controls. But you can however macro its buttons "on the fly" with keyboard keybindings if you so wish.

This is currently the only solution I found, reason being if you go into controls settings and say assign a "G18" key for example as an alternate key for "ship lights", the game will bind it to a regular keyboard letter and not the gameboards own keys.

The video below is less than a minute long, explains how to bind custom keyboard macros into a single G key on your G13 gameboard and that includes the thumb stick on the left side of it as well.

Hope this helps.
Fly safe, commander!

I have one and it's great. I've mapped it for UI controls and for that it is (for me) really intuitive. Top row buttons G3-5 zoom on panels, G11 and G16-18 work like arrow keys, G10 and G12 change sub-pages left and right, G20 is UI select, G22 Enter and G1 ESC. When all the ship flight controls are on the HOTAS, I don't need to touch regular keyboard at all during ED sessions.

Same as above , it works great! But.......... I did give in and bought a x52PRO and that is awesome !:D

Still the G13 is absolutely configuable to all your needs .

Cheers Cmdr's

I used an n52 speedpad for most of Alpha and while I appreciate it doesn't have a joystick, it was certainly "good enough". You get a LOT of function points at your finger tips, and as an alternative to a HOTAS throttle, it's pretty good. But not having an analogue throttle was something that did get on my nerves after a while, hence the investment in a throttle. Mind you, at the price, it feels a bit borderline to me as to whether it's money well spent. It's a lot of cash for what is effectively an ergonomic keyboard with a small thumbstick on it - fancy schmancy LCD screen notwithstanding (like I have time to look down at my hands!)....

So I would say it's certainly 80-90% of a decent HOTAS throttle in terms of usefulness. People tend to poo-poo keyboard setups but there really is no need to go HOTAS for everyone. Decent keyboard in conjunction with a decent joystick gets you most of what you need.

I have one and I did like using it, I bought an X55 though, because I wanted a joystick.

I use the G13 mostly just for moving around the UI now. I kinda like it though, its like having a separate "ship console" - I know GEEK!! I haven't quite gone down the instrument panel path though!

I have set it up with toggles to switch modes easily from normal flight controls and UI control - setting the mode switches by using the two buttons near the joystick, rather than the button at the top which always seemed like a stretch to me.

Happy to post the profile somewhere if you fancy it. Its mostly LUA scripted, but its not big by any means.

Can't do it right now, would be able to post it later though.

Hi all,

I just ordered this new Logitech G13 Advanced Gameboard. ($75)
It has 25 buttons and a joystick all in one. It looks like it would be awesome for ED. :D
Has anybody tied one of these yet for ED ?
Any feedback would be welcomed. If not I will let you know how it works when I get it.

Thanks Guys and Gals.

You will need to assign keys or commands to the buttons, they don't do anything by default unlike a joystick which registers a stick press for example.

Its not difficult to do even quite complex commands and there is a record function which you can use to see what it does and then cut and paste parts of it around.

I have one of the other in the Logitech series I was quite pleased recently to find I could macro a sequence that allowed me to auto-request docking at the stroke of one key!

I also use the G13 for all the in-ship UI functions and it works very well. I use it in conjunction with the X55 Rhino HOTAS, but before I owned the X55 I just used the G13 and a Logitech 3D Pro joystick, so the G13 was effectively the throttle in a HOTAS setup ^^

In fact, in my current set-up, anything that I can do on the HOTAS throttle unit I can still do on the G13. As the throttle isn't particularly ergonomic, I tend to alternate between them to give my left a rest.

These are my two profiles for normal flight and combat:

(during combat I use rudder pedals for Yaw)

A few points to note:
1) As others have said, you have to map the G13 to keys on the keyboard, and map those keys to controls in ED.
2) My default hand position on the G13 is not on the indented G4-G10-G11-G12 keys. I find using the next set along, G5-G11-G12-G13, to be much more ergonomic as you don't have to stretch to use the joystick from this position.

I was using the G-13 with a Logitech 3d Pro for a while and it worked quite well and took up less space on my desk. I didn't like using keys for the throttle though, so I bought an X-52 pro, and now the G-13 sits in between the throttle and stick. I use the G-13 for fine thruster control while docking and for random hotkeys. Most of them are duplicated on the X-52, but I like having lots of buttons in my simulators and setting the lights on my g-13 and x-52 to glow orange matches the cockpit, which is nice.

Recently though, I started using Voice Attack and I've stopped bothering with the G-13 altogether. I'll happily trade my G-13 and Logitech 3D pro for a Rift DK2 if any one wants to get rid of theirs!

Any chance you could post these profiles so we can easily use them?

Since there are several G13 users in this thread, I'm reposting my question from the other thread (I hope it's fine).

I'm considering buying a HOTAS kit (e.g. X52 non-Pro) or a less expensive standalone joystick (e.g. T-16000M). Given that I already own a G13, would you recommend that I go for the latter?

Yirg, I am using the T16000m withthe G13. I havent mapped out a lot of keys yet on the G13 yet. Just mainly using the thumb joy as throttle similar to what Ving here has
