Hardware & Technical Logitech quality

Following the exciting news that Logitech have decided to take charge of the HOTAS quality issues they inherited when they bought up Saitek ( https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/407573-New-Logitech-X56-HOTAS! ), I've been browsing the interwebs, trying to decide whether their claims are likely to hold water.

They have a lot of fans, who mostly seem to have had positive experiences with the company.

I'm not so sure. I e-mailed their support team about my X-55 and got a stock reply, followed by a stiff ignoring to. No foul, they didn't actually make the X-55, but a personal mailie wouldn't take long to type and would have gone a long way toward reassuring me that they actually care about the product line they've taken over.

What do you think, team? Are they likely to solve the X-56s quality issues? Will a new Logitech HOTAS last longer than it's predecessor?

I know my thread is about mice, not HOTAS, but there seems to be a lot of logitech fans in the mouse area.

Tired of the Hota's joystick issues. I have switched back to my Logitech joystick and am very happy.

I've gone even further and went to mouse and keyboard.

Only reason I use a HOTAS on Xbox is because mouse isn't available, and mouse>HOTAS>gamepad.

I've never liked a single Logitech stick in the past; one was so badly moulded that it cut my hand open, others were badly designed so the cables entering the stick would block motion to the bottom right (and that was an issue with several models, not just a one-off…). The G940 HOTAS had some disconcerting reports about quality issues in the flight sim community, to the point that some copies had not a single reliable potentiometer in them; manufacture and support for that set ended pretty quickly too. Add to that their tendency to make devices that need their drivers to work in the first place (because standards like HID are for chumps, and forcing a user to install software without which everyone would be happier is fun) and then silently dropping driver support rather sooner than later, and you have a company whose products that aren't simple mice I'm loath to recommend.

I have used quite a bit of Logitech equipment through the years...and it served me well.

Unfortunately, their stuff wears out, and when it does, in the intervening years...they move on from whatever design they used...and switch things up for newer models.

Most of the time this has happened, for me at least, the feature changes were not kept with the new interactions...and breaks the deal for me. BUT, their stuff wears out...it doesn't break...which is all i really ask for out of any of my electronics.

Yeah, that's what got me thinking...

I expect things to wear out, too. My X-55 lasted just shy of three years. The trouble is that two years and nine months, still mostly servicable, but failures starting to mount up was a bit short for a controller that retailed at over two hundred soverigns.

-Rant alert!-

I was actually looking at the X-65 or the Logitech G940 (thanks, Shadowdancer) when the X-55 came out. I'd tried the Warthog and the X-52s and didn't like either. One was far too much like the military kit I used in my last life; I know, I know, it's meant to, that's the whole point, but I still don't want reminded of what I used to do for a living! :p The other just felt like a toy. I know, all of these things are, but hey, immersion, y'know?
I was a bit wary of second hand kit and the G940 had a terrible reputation, so I was getting by with my older sticks. The Thrustmaster X is a cracking bit of kit and my old Cyborg 3D is still going strong- with the bonus of having force feedback in my older flight sims, always worth a giggle.
But the X-55 took my breath away! It looked fantastic- all the buttons, hats, axes and sliders a lad could want, lovely soft feel plastic, five stick tension settings in a robust, tool free mechanism... I just had to have one.

And here comes the rant. Supplies were limited, so British retailers hiked the already steep asking price through the roof. I'm pretty sure I saw one advertised at close to £300! It was sheer profiteering.

I imported mine from Germany, and even with shipping managed to get it for under 160 notes. Rip off Britain at it's level best... and breathe...

The HOTAS itself was- is- even better than the hype. It's an absolute joy to use and worth every penny of the asking price. I'm not sure I'd be able to say that if I'd forked out the outrageous amount our grubby retail racketeers were charging.
Regardless, the throttle was almost unusable by the end of January, so with a heavy heart I took it apart and set about bodging a temporary repair. It should hold for a few weeks, maybe even months.
But it will break again. :(

So I'm stuck on the horns of a dilemma.

Do I just bite the bullet and buy an X-56? If it lasts as well as my '55 it'll be good for around 33 months. That works out at less than £7 a month before failure...

Or do I hold out for an Eastern European throttle? A couple of hundred quid for the throttle alone and a whole new set of button pushes to memorise... VirPil reckon their unit will be ready by March, VKB might be the end of the year or even longer, assuming that their atrocious web site ever gets it's act together.

Decisions, decisions... :S

I hate that the HOTAS died so soon...I agree, when you break the $100 mark (Sorry US...50-60 quid?), there should be more longevity than 3 years. Looking around my desk...I still have 2 mice, and a headset/mic set that are 15 yrs old...and serviceable. Most of my Logitech stuff lasted in the 5 yr range. Paid no more than $50 for any given piece. Was it bleeding edge/state of the art kit? Not by a long shot. But the stuff worked and had some really nice features.

I have heard more about a fall in quality with Logitech, and some over marketing on their competition. I've used and Extreme 3d Pro for E: D since late beta...and the thing will not die. I sprang for a EBay X52 pro...for $45 to see if I can use a HOTAS...so there is that....we will have to wait and see. (I know the issue with buying electronics second hand...it was only $45 though, if I can use it at all, that beats the $150! :))

I can only hope they will improve upon the Saitek HOTAS.
I have the X56 and it is an awesome piece of equipment that gives me everything I need for a spacesim like Elite.
My only worry is the quality and if Logitech can improve the core problems then the X56 will have a bright future I think.

My experience with original Logitech joysticks and mice is very good.
I always return to Logitech when I need long lasting, reliable gaming mice.
I have tried many brands, but always felt them to be inferior to Logitech.
This includes Razer, Microsoft, Roccat etc.

If Logitech fails to significantly improve the X56 my next HOTAS will most likely be a Virpil set with Twist axis adapter.
Expensive, but I will have no other choice it seems, that is... if Logitech lets me down.

We had Logitech G branded X52 Pro at Insomnia last year along with two PC's running Elite Dangerous and Farming Simulator. But it was just a branding job. Nothing released yet I'm waiting to get a "sample" as the resident Elite Dangerous nut lol

What are y'all complaining about? I'm left handed and can count what is available for me on one hand (the left). And there is that owing the devil a days work thing.

Well would you believe it? No sooner have I started to bleat about my throttle woes on Reddit and this forum than Logitech support and their promo dude chime in with replies! What are the odds? :p

Sadly, they won't sell me a new wiring loom, but they swear blind the issues that MadCatz had are behind them now...

What's the verdict? Should I believe them? It's payday in about a week and my long haired admiral is quite keen to buy me one even if I can't get the readies together. Think it's worth a punt? :S

Did I say we, I meant they.

MadCatz issues are theirs alone I'd say. Can't keep blaming Peter Jones for that time Jessops sold no good sales vouchers. :x

Actually, pretty good. I've seen that often on various forums where manufactures seek out and address complaints. You'll see it often in Amazon and Newegg reviews as well. It's just smart customer service using the tools of the internet. The question is how the complete the process is the real wrinkle in the story, but that they made the effort is very good.
