Logitech X56 Rhino

I have just purchased a Logitech X56 Rhino to replace my T1600M which has finally deterioted to the point where I can use the throttle slider to control the yaw function. What is everyone's opinion of the X56 as a Hotas system?

Also does anyone have any pointers for the best way to set it up?

Also I have purchased a powered USB 3.0 hub as I think that is the best way to go to prevent BSOD's which I have heard it can cause when plugged directly into the PC's USB ports.
Where can you buy them?
Even Logitech doesn't sell them. They are always out of stock.

When you figure it all out store your bindings in a safe place just in case you lose them plugging in other toys with your computer. Google for answers. ED doesn't see it especially with new controllers you start over. But me playing this game since 1984 and years with ED I can quickly restore any bindings using a new controller in less than 10 minutes from memory. As for real life and relationships many gals you married would want me to take them to dinner versus playing this silly game. So what are your priorities?

As a girl playing this game I would love to meet you. You maybe ignore me playing ED. Thus I love you already because we are both nuts about a stupid game.

This is exactly what I am doing with my warthog - my only downfall being how well some of the control options are hidden in the bindings file - particularly as I too am trying to get the stick layout mirroring the one I had on the X56
The bindings are all quickly to do in a few moments less YAW using pedals with the Warthog. That is my big turnoff but other players love them for the immersion. You decide.

What's it like with no twist axis?

I cut my teeth with tie fighter, i don't want to learn how to play without both yaw and roll on the stick.

Is the automatic setting any good?

I found it on Amazon.co.uk -- admittedly it was the last one in stock, I had looked at them 8 hours earlier when 4 were available, so I bought it as I had originally been looking for a new t1600m to replace my erratic one, but they were all out of stock.

But the X-56 is not worth $400.00 or more because Logitech never figured out all the YAW joystick issues. Just my opinion.

Am I the only one who uses the X-56 software to map the buttons?

I've just set random keyboard keys to the controls I need in ED's settings and then play around and arrange those in the X-56 profiler. I've found it convenient. I can have multiple profiles (I can switch with a click of a mouse) and take use of the three different modes. I used to have a landing mode, which had hardpoints and boost disabled among other things to avoid any mishaps around stations. Plus, it's easy to try different configurations without launching the game or fear of accidentally messing up your actual control schemes.

If the Warthog had twist axis I'd be all over it. It is a mystery to me that Thrustmaster does not release a twist axis variant. They must know it would sell like hotcakes.

I had the 55 for... err... 4 or 5 years and I'm a year or so in to 56 ownership. I have a 16000M as well (for laptop use) but I prefer the 56. For the money (it is a lot) it's in that sort of area of "that's too much for plastic" but "I'd have to spend it again to get the next step up", so it's the caveat to me saying that I really like it. Maybe next time I'll "upgrade" again but getting that level of input, feel AND have twist (without using pedals) is impossible AND you'd have to pay £600 for a set... hmm. I "recommend" it despite the obvious (well documented) quality issues from the past.

Coming from ua position of all previous sticks having twist yaw, I continue to try to twist the stick... Pedals arrive in the next few days, so I'll be cussing for a while longer as my brain gets used to them existing. So, as a response - without yaw on the stick is currently frustrating - ask me again in a couple of months!

I will say that the lack of any 'dead' movement on the stick does make for much improved 'minor adjustments' over the previous sticks - but may just blame myself for past enthusuasm with sticks that have very light operating force. (Even with 'digital yaw' I was able to tether orbit a station in FA-Off much more accurately than previous attempts - although some of that may actually just be me improving - but the small amount of stick movement I think helped)

I'm blaming myself for forgetting where some of the less obvious bindings reside in the list - setting up a stick every year or so hasn't made memorising a huge list particularly easy - but I will get there over time - pretty much as with the previous attempts, memory will get jogged at some point ;)

It is price scalping, evident here in the UK too - even the HOTAS X / 4 / 1 has had asking prices of in excess of £250 ($300+) on some sites as no available stock (until later this week in the UK) from regular outlets has meant that opportunists have been rubbing their hands together with glee!

I've had a Saitek X55 since first starting back in Elite, in Beta. Throttle has been absolutely spot on since I first spread the grease about a bit (as advised at the time), and the Joystick (although big for my hands) is extremely functional ... and I haven't mapped all the buttons. My twist/yaw is beginning to wander, so I've ordered replacement, but I'll keep the throttle - until I go HOSAS. Overall, a very good combination. As others have said, there are better sticks (I hope), but it's served me well for years.
Enjoy!
