LOL exceeding G-force limit

Never saw this before. I can only imagine how much immersion this would bring for those with oculus rift.:D

I managed to get my screen almost completely red, tried the other way around and no black out. Looks like in 3300 they have something to remedy black out but not red out.. hmm for blackout maybe they squeeze your body to zemina torval size!

You actually red out easier than black out: even an average human can withstand 5 g without problems before blacking out, a trained pilot 9 g. On the other hand, you red out already at -2 to -3 g.

As there's clearly an inertial damper in these ships (otherwise acceleration/deceleration would kill the pilot) I fail to see how lateral g-force could be possible ... yeah, I know ... pedant.

I got my first red out last night actually in my Vulture. I used to be a pretty heavy flight simmer(IL-2) So it brought back a few memories

Blackout is easier to deal with, since it results from blood draining down from the brain due to G-force. All you need is a suit that squeezes your legs and abdomen along with the pilot also squeezing muscles in those areas so that the blood doesn't pool down to legs. All modern jet fighters have such anti-G suits.

Redout is harder since the blood starts pooling in pilot's head. It is also more dangerous, since it can cause burst blood vessels in eyes and the brain. There really is no way to prevent that other than inserting some sort of flow regulators inside the blood vessels.

Every time I see someone comment on that effect it makes me giggle a little inside...

Geforce effects was something we had internally in the early alphas but was never really meant to be released - we pushed the limits out to where ships of the time couldn't trigger it and then forgot entirely until faster ships and flight model changes made it attainable again... debug colour-overlay and all. We could remove it but it's become an accidental feature I guess :).

For anyone interested the current limits are 18 negative G to start a red-out and 25 positive G to start a blackout, if you hold it for 4 seconds above that limit you'll lose control. Sustained for a while that would not to good things to a human body/brain!

That is awesome and just a nice little touch of "realism" I say that in quotes because those G-loads would kill you. Hey but who am I to say what advances have been made in the future.

Don't remove it, there are far more obvious things to remove from ED than the red-out :p

Well, i'm shocked. Shocked and astounded that a dev actually put some numbers on something. Shouldn't you have been a little more vague here? I'm sure Mike Brookes will give you a good spanking later for giving out numbers. :D

It's allot easier to squeeze blood into your head rather than out of it.

Sort of related to this, but what ever happened to the gravitational pull effect that you experienced going past a stellar body at close range and at speed? It was in the betas and early releases but then was removed for some reason. I quite liked it :)

I love the fact that we have redouts and blackouts but 2 ships slamming head on and over 800m/s combined has no ill effect the pilot even though the force would be immense

Mark, it seems Mike Evans have said quite recently that he isn't still decided on using this, however it's still possibility - therefore it's not removed yet.

Heh, yeah - we actually started out fairly realistic in that aspect, with limits of -4 to +9 vertical G and about 5g lateral (assuming good neck bracing). Quickly realised that those limits crippled any fast manouvres though, and yes ramming someone almost guaranteed a double blackout :p. I forgot to turn off those limits first time I was experimenting with supercruise actually, as soon as I touched the controls the pilot blacked out for about a minute as the g-forces went high enough to liquify metal! Oops....

That was actually more or less a bug believe it or not ;). The effect was nice, but what was actually causing it was the massive accelerations feeding unexpected values into the camera shake/bob model making it go haywire. Which in itself is entirely reasonable (and I'd have left it in) but the same unexpected values in different situations caused a load of transition errors and nasty camera motion - which we fixed at some point. It's on my personal wishlist to re-add correctly way down the line, but there's far more important tasks ahead of it in the queue.
