Hardware & Technical LoL. Friend Didn't Listen... [PC Build]

I sort of made a friend at work. (Woooh, first one!)

Anyhoo, we got talking about building PCs, when another guy butted in to show is his PC, and started shouting about how awesome it was (it wasn't...lol)...
I was trying to offer the best advice I could, and I explained I don't know much about the latest AMD hardware, but you can't go wrong with an new i5 anyway.
Other guy butts in saying he has a 4th gen i5. Yay for him. And starts spewing out the most utter garbage I've ever heard. Apparently his GPU has 16gb of RAM, and his motherboard can take both DDR 3&4, possibly 5 too, and all kinds of processors......? He couldn't answer many of my questions about his rig...
Smells like dog poop to me. Lol

I warned my friend that this guy doesn't seem to know what he's on about, but he's known the other guy longer than he's known me.

Anyway, I didn't see my new friend for a few days due to work, and when I went in today, he said he'd ordered a new motherboard, because it was the same as the other guys.

He'd ordered an Asrock 970 AM3+ motherboard.... lol
I recommended he cancel the order, but it had already arrived and he doesn't want to return it.

So my new friend will essentially have the same PC as me.
A 970 motherboard, with an AMD FX 8320 processor. Lol

Atleast it was cheap. :p
I said he should use the money he saved to go straight for 16gb of RAM to future proof it as much as possible.

Can't fault my CPU though. Has plenty of power.
And his old PC is a core 2 duo and 1GB of ram. Lol.
so it's a big step up.

Still. No one ever listens to me though. :D

Reminds me of someone I know... I've got a work friend who I swear thinks he's some top secret government hacker.. had a conversation while working with the fella that went something like this...

Me: Hey, I'm building a new pc, I hear you're into tech, any suggestions?
Him: Nah mate, don't bother with PCs, too expensive and too easy to hack..
Me: Oh right, what would you suggest then?
Him: Get a console mate, can do vr and play all the games you'll ever want just as well as any pc...
Me: I've done the whole console thing, I think I want to go pc just for the fun of building it myself...
Him: Sure I get that, but you need to be aware, someone like me could easily hack your rig to shut off your CPU cooling, you'd never notice, your processor would hit like 200 degrees and burn out your system, maybe even start a house fire!
Me: Um, why would anyone want to do that?
Him: Maybe you make some enemies online, I went on a course with GCHQ, I saw what top people can do... I could hack all your online accounts right now and you'd never know...
Me: Um okay, do you even have a pc?
Him: Nah mate, Xbox.

Pretty sure he's actually Neo from The Matrix!

I rebuilt my PC a couple of years ago decently priced since it was around Christmas and sales. About a year ago upgraded my GPU to a 1070 OC. Again around Christmas on sale. I will never say PC building is cheap compared to buying a console, but if you are patient and shop around it doesnt have to break the bank. For a better gaming experience I will spend a little bit more money for it.

I've had good luck with Amazon warehouse deals. Grab stuff 15 - 20% off. Supposedly minor damage on the product and everything has arrived flawless.

What he's saying is, he doesn't know how to build one, or protect it. Using a firewall. Which comes with Windows.

Genius. :p

I'm lending my friend my [really] old AMD HD 6870 1GB, and [really really] old 630w PSU, just to get his PC working until he can afford his own GPU and PSU. (Assuming mine still work!)

So apart from him having 16Gb of RAM (I only have 8Gb, so old!), his PC is basically going to be identical to my before I installed a GTX 770... Lol

Not sure whether I should recommend he buys an aftermarket CPU cooler though. The AMD stock coolers are a bit pants. But he won't be overclocking it. I never tried running mine with a stock cooler so I don't even know. Lol
