"Lollipop" speed indicator

Hi,

Can someone please explain how the "lollipop" indicator works on the thrust HUD display?

I see that it can be yellow, blue-purple and blue. What do each of these colors mean? Also, am I correct in saying that if I keep the indicator in the blue, my speed will slow down automatically when super cruising to a space station? I must be doing something wrong, as my ship does not always slow down and I overshoot the space station quite considerably.

May I please have some help?

Thanks in advance

Keeping your throttle at 50% or in the blue will slow you down automatically while in supercruise, to a point. If you speed up to within a pretty close distance to your target then put it in the blue you will still most likely overshoot if your ship doesn't have enough room to slow down.

Staying in the blue zone will also allow you to turn sharper than having your throttle at any other point. When turning in a dogfight this is where you usually want your throttle to be if you're in a turning fight.

To clarify: You need to be in the lower blue range, then the gravitational inluence on your frameshift drive will automatically slow you down just enough to not miss the stations. Provided you haven't already reached too high a speed, since the gravity well also impairs your ability to slow down, and you'll miss it anyway.

Set up a key for 50% throttle in the settings, and use that as an impromptu "cruise control" once your speed matches 1/10 of the remaining distance (i.e. 30c at 300ls, you can fly at full throttle until then). It'll keep you at the lower end of the blue, and you'll never overshoot anything in supercruise again.

In combat you probably don't want to stay at 50% throttle, but like someone said above, that's where you get the best possible turn rate.
