I tried the second-monitor-to-do-additional-tasks setup once. I found out that I'm very bad at multi-tasking (and extremely good at sun-diving).

Yeah - I think many of us have pressed the wrong key at precisely the wrong moment ... 'Your Ship has been destroyed' ... [knocked out]

Another thing you can do is take a break from exploring and play some CQC. A lot of action but you don't have to worry about losing ships.
