Since i started this « Scale » thread, it’s been eating at me that the world of Elite is very singular in its play Style. You do everything “by yourself”. The “Wings” update will help a little bit with that, but still to a very micro level (4players).
Another Thread concerning “how many ships do you own” sparked the second part of this very thread. Transportation.
Essentially, it is very difficult to travel in this world without leaving something behind. I was a bit frustrated with that situation recently, when the Community Goals were introduced. First in Yembo, I got all excited and took my Type7 there (it jumps far, fast). But had to leave my Viper Behind. I was under the assumption that I would come back to get it later. Some 90 Ly later, at Yembo, I decided to do some Bounty Hunting… oh wait, I left my Viper behind… So ended up purchasing another Viper for combat and fun.
A few days later, another community goal appears, about 200ly away… there is NO WAY I’m making this much travel in a Viper, it’ll take 3 hours. I could go in my Type7, but I’d have to leave or sell yet another Viper in the hopes that I can purchase a A+ Viper over there. Risky.
That is essentially spending more time traveling “to have fun” than actually “having fun”.
Long Story Short;
It would be very nice to have a “Public Transit” system. Essentially a big community Train or Bus or Taxi of some kind.
Get in, pay a fee, get out at the desired System.
Ideally, all “small” ships (Sidey, Viper, Cobra…) could get in as well. Else, you get dropped off at a station and you can purchase a ship there.
A gameplay similar to Gran Theft Auto 3-4-5-6… you call up a Taxi and for a fee, brings you far away.
Or a Transit ship that is in constant movement between Systems.
So you save a ton of time, but spend money in the process.
In the example of the two Community Goals, I’d have used a system such as this a bunch of time at least.
I found this random illustration that sparked some interest. I do not own the rights.

- It stops for a few minutes at each beacons, so players can “embark” or “disembark” a set number of systems.
- Many of these Transit ships could have a set course like a city bus or Metro and just go around indefinitely.
- You pay per distance of course.
So you save a ton of time, but spend money in the process.
