Newcomer / Intro Long distance traveling

Well, I'm in a Eagle so not sure if that's a problem, but say I wanted to eventually end up in Alliance space close to Alioth. How would I do that? Looking at the galaxy map and trying to plot a route in my head is rather challenging, :p

unfortunately thats the only way if the galaxy map doesnt let you plot a route. i started in LHS 3447 and managed to get to Sol over 80 LY away doing this... just be patient, and make sure you have enough fuel.

Type in the name of the system you want to get to in the box in the Navigation Tab then press UI select key. The map should Zoom to that system and it will be highlighted in the map. Wait for the route finder (in the buttons next to the system in the map)icon to change from Red to White. This may take a while if the destination is a long way from your current location. Once its White, click on it and the game will plot a route in yellow for you. The first system on the route will automatically be selected as your hyperspace destination and once you get to that system the next system while automatically be selected as a destination and so on.... If you are planning on taking cargo make sure you have the weight of the cargo entered in the slider on the navigation tab before you use the route finder, since increased weight reduces jump range and changes the optimal route.

Open up your Galaxy Map and navigate to the View tab. There you can select from a bunch of options - one of them being Allegiance, which will mark the systems by colour depending on whether they are Empire, Independent, Federation, Alliance or None. If you can't reach a desired system yet, you may want to look into upgrading your internal modules to allow your ship to jump farther.

Once you've figured out roughly where you want to go, simply select the system, and then click the Route icon.

OH, this whole time I thought a red route just meant that the route was going to be unavailable till upgrades or such. Thanks! :)

Long routes are best plotted in 50ly or so stretches, I've found. There's some options to choose the path that takes less fuel or the path that takes the fewest jumps, it defaults to less fuel.

Getting an FSD that can do at least 11 ly helps a lot. The starting Sidewinder FSD has trouble finding a route in some parts because the stars are too far apart.

Alliance space is upwards from most of the rest of human space, so to start with just pick systems that are above your current one on the galaxy map.

The plotter only goes so far as well. Just because it won't let you plot a direct route doesn't necessarily mean you can't make it. I think its only as far as a tank will take you, but I'm not sure if its that or 50 or 100 ly or whatever. Anyways get closer is what I'm saying lol.

Just a update: So I'm in Alliance space, I think 20-30ly out from Alioth. I'm pretty sure I'm about to run into a dead end (literally) because the area around Alioth requires jumps longer than the jumps the default eagle drive can handle. I know I can't get into Alioth anyway, but about to start figuring out how to gain reputation with the Alliance.

All in all, the journey was the most fun I've had in the game so far - I made about 30-40K selling data I scanned as I jumped from system to system (actually feel like I made some progress). I got interdicted a few times but always managed to escape, and learned how to efficiently fuel scoop (and how hot things need to get before hull damage).

I highly recommend any new players take a chance if they're feeling a bit aimless and start heading out into space. VERY rewarding experience. Hopefully finding out exactly how to gain reputation so I can get access into Alioth is just as fun. :)

If you have a spare screen or laptop, run this handy route planer http://www.elitedangerouscentral.com/

Look at the system map and see if you can figure out who owns it. Then explore the systems around it to find other bases for the controlling faction and do missions from there till you get a mission to get a pass. That's kinda the general way to get into any system you need to have a pass for. Major factions may have a different way to go about it. it might take rank or something, but it's the same basic idea. The only system it won't ever work on that I know of is the founders system.

So basically just explore all the nooks and crannies in that area and rank up with the factions and your good.
