Newcomer / Intro Long-range cargo hauling with an Anaconda

So, I've been looking around YouTube as well as some of the threads in this forums. Not sure very where else to look to, so I thought I'd start a thread and ask around to get some questions I've been having answered.

I started playing Elite:Dangerous about a week ago and have been playing since then, especially after I saw the Anaconda on YouTube. Normally, the big guns and stuffs tend to motivate me into playing it out hardcore as I have been doing so for other MMOs/Games as well. So here goes.

I bought an Anaconda after 3 days of long range cargo hauling via Sothis Mining (Sothis System) with the ASP Explorer. I was refreshing between Open/Private/Solo for the best mission options as learned from some of the tips I came across from other players. Aside from making about 16-25million an hour depending on my luck or patience with mission-refreshing, I am getting bored with using the ASP Explorer.

According to everyone, bulk-trading with the Anaconda is nowhere near as profitable as the usual ASP Explorer cargo hauling would give. And earlier on, I came across some videos of players doing Sothis runs with their Anacondas (which means larger cargo holds and therefore, more money).

The question that has been bugging me is, as Sothis Mining outpost (as do all other outposts in the galaxy) only provide up to Medium landing pads, how do I go about doing long-range cargo hauling with the Anaconda? For instance, clicking on missions etc that won't get me on an Outpost by accident.

I apologize if this question has been answered before somewhere in the forums, or that if the question posted here is ridiculously noob.

So all in all, if I go to the station in Sothis System, and select missions regarding cargo hauling, I am able to do them so long as they are not highlighted in red?

Yes, you only need to have enough reputation with local factions so they issue you the good ones. Then, as long as the mission is pointed at a lace where you can land (stations and planetary bases) you can take it and do it.

Anaconda has 4x the cargo capacity of an Asp Exp, but the problem is the size. The way I understand smuggling missions usually involve outposts which do not have large landing pads and Anaconda requires a large pad. Asp Exp is the preferred ship form many smugglers because it's capable of carrying 100+ T of cargo and has a great jump range (3rd longest in the game?) and can land on M landing pads.

For non-smuggling, bulk hauling like the recent Imperial Ships or Tobacco CGs the Anaconda can carry 400+ T of cargo though so it would be a lot more profitable than an Asp Exp. I think only two or three large ships can beat that.

There are lots of smuggling missions to the stations and many stations have black market for "bulk smuggling". But the main issue is station security force. Small outposts don't have it, frankly, while around the station there is a very real risk of being caught red-handed, because, let's face it - Anaconda isn't a particularly sneaky. Even if you apply the black paintjob. :D

Erm....Meh
Sry but you should better do some solid gameplay first and....buy an ADVANCED discovery scanner okay?

Sothis trades are ONE way to make money but this is not the actual game, just about 1% of the gameplay.

And before i forget, buy an ADVANCED discovery scanner.

Since you can purchase an Anaconde *cough* you should take this thing REALLY ;)

LOL, Anaconda is anything but sneaky. I bought one after getting lucky with the More Imperial Warships CG. Its capacity and jump range are indeed impressive but I hate flying it. It handles like a very large bathtub filled with water. I get stuck in the slot often and I keep flying too close to stars and dropping out of supercruise because of its awful turn radius. The view from the cockpit sucks big time too. I'm still on the fence about it but I'm underwhelmed and rather disappointed. I may just get a Python instead and deal with its short jump range.

Anaconda would be awesome for the trek to Jaques though.

Agreed. Anaconda excels at long range hauling. The "bathtub" comparison made me laugh, mainly because how spot on it is. :D

I was smuggling today in a Cutter. If that can be done, an Anaconda can do it.

Anyway, not all of the long-range missions are smuggling missions. In fact most of them are not.

LOL - spot on, as much as I like my Anaconda I was initially disappointed by it. However, this was tempered as I had flown a T9 before I got the Anaconda so I know what a quick machine it is compared to the T9! All I can say is that you get used to it but best to keep some other ships in your fleet for fun.

Yes I have seen several relatively new CMDRs who were obsessed in getting that Conda asap and then getting stuck in the mailslot.
Takes probably months before you can dock like a pro after building up your flight skills with the other ships:

As someone once said it is not the size that matters, it's how you use it[hotas]

Do you want to get killed? this is how you get killed..

Your skills are awesome! but suggesting this is a pro way when it is more a suicidal way.. all it takes is one sidewinder coming up from its landing pad and you can die like a pro though!!

I hasten to add that it's not my video, as I'm on a Macbook KB&M setup, but does show you it's possible to fly a Conda like an Asp with some decent thrusters - just takes time to get to that kind of skill level and understanding of your ship's (size) limits.

LOL, I've NEVER had that problem... not even the first time I drove mine out of Aulin.. and then right back in to see if I could do it.

After awhile I *DID* buy a docking computer out of sheer laziness, however. Every now and again the random comms tech at any given station will harass me about "maybe you should learn to fly your ship"

According to everyone, bulk-trading with the Anaconda is nowhere near as profitable as the usual ASP Explorer cargo hauling would give.

With an unmodified D'd out Anaconda with 368t cargo capacity, I can make the trip from Aulin to Sothis in 17 jumps. Fully laden it's roughly 24-25 jumps back to civilization. If you pick your missions halfway carefully you can easily clear 40-50 million in one trip [I usually average around 42ish]

and I keep flying too close to stars and dropping out of supercruise because of its awful turn radius.

Ship is working as intended. Pilot, unfortunately, is not [hotas] Bathtub analogy is HELLA accurate, however.

The view from the cockpit sucks big time too.

You should see it in VR...

Ultimately it's a really REALLY good ship for those long haul missions. I don't do smuggling runs, but as long as you make sure you don't have any accidental mission reward cargo in your hold you should be pretty much left alone. I would suggest, however, that you temper your long range hauling with a plethora of other activites or risk contracting "Space trucker insanity" [as I call it] Grinding long haul missions is a lot like grinding rep: what you're really grinding away at is your sanity, and after a varying amount of time will eventually make you sick of it. Remember, ultimately money is just a way of keeping score, once you have a few ships and plenty of buybacks...

Nonsense good Sir!
Now that they fixed it, the shiny gold paintjob is the only way to go for maximum stealth and sneakiness!

Long-range deliveries from Sothis/Newholm Station and Ceos/New Dawn Station earn about 15-25 million per lap in an Asp-X and about 30-60 million per lap in an Anaconda depending on how choosy you are picking missions.
There is only one station in Ceos (New Dawn) and two in Sothis (Newholm & Sothis Mining). An Asp-X allows more mission variety via the ability to use the "Medium" landing pads at Sothis Mining. Sothis Mining is an Outpost and has no "Large" landing pads but you can do very well without ever going to Sothis Mining. The mission board will not allow you to accept a mission you cannot complete. Run data missions between Newholm and New Dawn, cherry-pick the choicest long-range delivery missions (they usually go to roughly the same region of space), spam, spam, spam, stack, stack, stack and go, go, go! You will be dead-heading back to Sothis from the bubble, I usually pick up some rares on the way to sell at New Dawn or Newholm, makes mondo profit and raises rep when sold. I tend not to be so choosy with missions, if two or more are going to the same station I usually accept a little less and I want to FLY, not wait for missions and so I earn "only" about 40 million per lap, that's NET, after all costs (repairs, restocks, fuel) including completing "donation" missions along the way. Not too shabby when I keep read stories about delivering shiploads of stuff to stations to earn a few million . . .

Regarding learning to slot and park the Anaconda: Automatic Docking Computer! A great tool for learning how to line up at the proper level in the slot to avoid getting hung-up in the toaster-rack! I kept mine and after blasting thru the slot I will generally hand-off control to the Otto-Dokker for final parking, the computer being so much better at "backing up" than I am!

Oh, wow!
I always used it for its high reflectivity as a means of safer fuel scooping on my exploration vessels.

What you say is it reflects the scanner waves as well!? *gasps*
