Long Range Exploration

Hello there fellow Commanders.

Im Ray Nova. Started out Bounty Hunting, currerntly trading and soon i want to do all that plus Exploring to a certain degree.

Learning how to hunt was a piece of cake, trading took me some time but now im absolutely lost. Exploring random systems is good and all but precise cartography of the universe seems impossible to me at this point.

The reason for that mainly is that as of right now Im incapable to plot a route longer than lets say 50ly...

I tried this with my Hunter Cobra: riged it for exploration with intermediate discovery scanner, a detailed surface scanner, a rating fsd and powerplant and the rest so i would get the max jumprange possible. Then i took a look at the galaxy map. the fringe space looked the most interesting so there it was i wanted to go. picked a random star but wasnt able to plot the course. now i understand the computer might not be able to cover a distance of 2000+ ly but even 200 proved to be too much.

Do I really have to cover the distance in such tiny steps as 100- 150 ly? considering where i want to go after i buy the asp that seems to be awefully much work.

There's usually an interesting start within 100ly. I am currently setting the target to be a nebula, then I can arrange the gal to get the correct direction (ie I can see the nebula) then look for interesting stars en route. On my way to north America nebula, already found 3 black holes and a neutron star. The gal map shows the star type in the info tab.

That... that never occurred to me. So simple, so brilliant. I feel so stupid now.

I always make sure I am aimed, more or less, towards Barnards Loop. I don't mind the short steps in an exploratory trip since I scan the intervening systems, and the exact destination is secondary.

Thank you for your help!

by the way is there an average profit estimate for the complete exploration of a system?
i know the earth like systems are the most valuable but lets say i have the least valuable system with orbital bodies in it. how much will i get aprox. for the scan of every body in system with surface scanner and so on.?

Route planner is restricted to 100ly. This will be increased 10 fold soontm

In area if low stellar density it will get out to 140 or so. It would probably do that in higher density if you left it long enough.

What we really need is an 'add way-point' button in the map...

Have you looked at THIS yet? - Also if you get higher up route planning gets faster and you can plot up to 140ly if you wait 30 seconds ish where systems are dense is take a very long time to reach a plot of 80ly - as the current system plots every possible direction in the galaxy! Hopefully soon you will be able to choose a destination then get it to work like a sat nav

I usually only scan the main star if I am in systems with only asteroids and ice planets. We are talking about less than 5000 cr, the star gives 1200 cr of those.

Systems with mineral rich planets planets + gas giants that may or may not have life usually can give you around 20 0000. Even better with water planets and planets with terraforming potential.
