Hardware & Technical Long term gaming comfort...

Probably not quite the right forum but here goes.

I spend some time at work sitting in an office chair. I have worked in a lot of offices and I have sat in a lot of chairs.

I come home and as soon as I have had fun being a Dad and my beautiful kids are in bed I come and play on my PC. I have done the PC thing since 2000 when I owned my first PC. I have had many chairs.

No office chair I have ever sat in, at work or at my home, has ever been anything but torture for me. And I've been working in offices since 1988. After 20 minutes in any office chair, no matter how grand, the bum padding is squashed flat and my pert derriere is in agony! I spent 3 weeks looking for a 'good' office chair when I set up my business. £220. Guess what? Yup, after a disappointingly short while (certainly not £220 worth of while) it sucked.

Stick with me.

Now my main passion until recently was World Of Tanks. I spend most weekend evenings playing with my bro and close friend.

Now I have Elite Dangerous I am spending even longer shifts in the saddle.

You Commanders must be doing the same!? What is your trick for staying comfy?

I ask because I think I have cracked it.

I figured that I am only comfortable seated for long periods of time on my motorcycle and in my car. Wife won't let me bring the bike up two flights of stairs to the computer room so I figured it had to be car route.

I searched fleabay for a decent car interior, going cheap, close by me. Close by because if they are advertised as pick up only they tend to be cheaper. And after a few weeks I found something. It was the interior out of a base model Audi Q3 in cloth. Front seats, back split folding seats and all door panels. I got the lot for £50! I collected the seats (the seller had upgraded his Audi interior to leather) and told him I didn't need the cloth door inserts.

After a bit of fabrication (not too much mind you) I have a fantastic office seat and a perfect seat for me at home too!

I used the larger front seat for my office chair and the rear folding seat for my home PC chair as it folds flat and goes completely under the desk when not in use.

Now I can sit for hours without screaming in pain when I get out of my chair!

What do you think?

My home PC chair. It folds flat and goes under the desk.

Anyway, I know it isn't quite bang on ED subject matter but with so many of us spending time in the hot seat I thought it might be pertinent!

I hope you like them...

I would wear the seatbelt too. Extra safety and that extra cockpit feel.

And another North East lad on the forums I see :)

And you'll be pleased to read I removed the seat airbag! My wife says I should have left it in considering how I drive. I can't even be trusted around the office...

Hi ste. Yes I am in Durham. Just outside in sunny Sacriston...

Very cool and a great solution.

Mine is usually to put a comfy cushion on the seat I'm in - it seems to alleviate my posterior issues :)

I did the cushion thing for years. Not a very good solution as the cushion gets as flat as the seat padding in about the same 20 minutes. Also creates posture issues for me.

I now have the only office and gaming chairs I'll ever need!

Sunny Seaham here. :)

Can't argue with that, looks comfy, I have to wonder how you fitted it to the old stem though ? I've had a few office chairs myself and the stem has always been the weakest part, since the chair is probably heavier than the original it may not last long :) is it drilled and bolted or welded ?

My office chair is welded and the home pc chair is bolted. The stems will be an issue no doubt but both stems, although fully operational, are at minimum extension.

let's hope it lasts a while for the sake of posterior :) At 18 stone I would need some kind of industrial fixing and a scaffold bar :)

I thought pretty much the same as you OP and bought a driver's side racing seat to build my simpit around.

Great idea. I've been thinking about this subject recently also because of soreness due to long hours in this game, that car seats are much more comfortable over long periods. I think it's because car seat cushions are usually suspended, whereas office chair are just foam paddings over a shell.

Now I just have to find the right car seat.
