Look both ways before crossing the arms

First to understand my descriptions, think of looking down on the galaxy from above. Now with the civilized space being at the bottom of the map I will call that south. The galaxy core is then due north.

I am on my 3rd exploration trip. My first trip I used an Adder and went East along the arm that civilized space is in. I went out about 2500ly overall distance from Maridal my home port. My second trip I upgraded to an Asp and went North East about 1000 to 1500 ly then crossed due north over the "empty" area into the next arm. I went about 6500 ly out from Maridal and then returned back.

Ok, This time I also went, I think a bit more east before I tried to cross the "empty" space between the arms. Well I am having to sidetrack because I cannot continue to cross into the northern arm as I cannot find a path since any northerly direction I head the gap between the stars exceeds my 34.29 jump range. The stars are there, they are just too far apart. I have tried going up and down but still cannot find a way. Last night I traveled a couple hundred ly east, all the time trying to find a path north. Its not like I am really far away. I am about 5300 ly from Maridal in the same arm it is in.

The odd thing in my 2nd trip is I just crossed the "empty" without even thinking about out it.:S

It does look like on the galaxy map if I go a bit more west there is denser area in the "empty" space between arms. Anyone else run into this? So anyhow, just like crossing the street, look both ways before crossing over to the next arm. lol

How far above or below the galactic plane are you? If you are where I think you are, you shouldn't have any difficulty at all in crossing the space between the arms if you are close to the galactic plane.

Well you were right. I had checked for that the night before last but I had thought I was closer to the bottom so I kept looking for a path higher up and could find none.

Double checking again last night after reading your post I searched very far both up and down and it turns out I was darn near the top of galaxy rather than near the bottom. So when I was checking for a path higher I was actually looking in the wrong direction and when I checked lower I did not go far enough down since I thought I was near the bottom anyhow. Doh!

I wish there was a easy way to gauge your rough vertical position.

If you look at the co-ordinates on the galactic map then the second one gives distance from the galactic plane (*). +ve is above the plane, -ve is below.

* - actually, it's vertical distance from Sol which itself is about 20-30 LY above the galactic plane, but it's a good enough approximation

I like flying/exploring in those areas up and down between the arms where the jump options really start to thin out. When the economical routes and the fastest routes start looking about the same I'm in my zone.

Or at least the zone I'm into at the moment.
