Look what I mined!

A Conda kept chasing me while I was trying to mine, then he followed me to the station. The cops were taking too long so I gave them a hand.
I did about 50% of the damage. Mining lasers don't seem that bad against shields, and Orcas are great for ramming :)

My first ever kill was in a mining Hauler that way.

I then decided it's fun and upgraded to a mining Adder including pulse lasers.

Am a combat miner ever since. Hope you can appreciate dealing with the pirates one way or another in the future instead of moaning about their presence ;)

I was ice mining with Count the other day when a pirate dropped in on us. Count's medium mining lasers did a reasonable amount of damage once the pirate's shields went down, more than I expected.

My 3 large MCs did most of the damage though :D

You sure you did 50% damage? Last time I looked at the mining laser stats they appeared to be abysmal.
Most of the hull damage I did to the conda was with ramming, but with only 127 MJ I couldn't do that too often. The mining lasers did do some damage to his hull, but I think they were far better against the shields.
I only joined the fight because I knew I could run away if it got ugly.
The cops were pretty ineffective. The Conda had followed me to the station and started fighting the cops before I docked. The fight was still going on when I left the station but the cops had taken only one ring off the shields. So I thought I would give them a hand. Definitely not a solo kill, but I certainly contributed.

Think it might be safe to bring out the mining 'conda? Just after the 2.1 update I got beaten up pretty bad by two small ships I couldn't outmaneuver, so I stripped it and left the hull at my normal mining location, kitted out a clipper and have been outrunning the baddies ever since. I liked the layout in the 'conda, wouldn't mind refitting it if it can now hold it's own....

I was forced to sell mine. I was destroyed by a Gunship and didn't have enough for a second rebuy. The station I was rebuilt in didn't have outfitting enough to make a workable ship with enough for insurance.
My Clipper became my mining ship once again after that. I haven't engineered the Clipper yet, but after the lvl5 clean drive upgrade in my Orca, I'm quite keen to see what an upgrade will do to the Clipper's performance. I just haven't decided whether to go clean or dirty on the Clipper.

Dealing with the arcade nature of ED. Shouldn't have happened, but it has become more arcade than sim. Sad really considering the sim part is what made it a historic game in the first place for all the nerds of the past. All you can do is do what all those are saying........learn to deal with it. Sucks but you got to. Even when out mining LYs away from the nearest sign of life, the NPC pirate shows up magically. Deal with it. Then you can get over it, and enjoy the game once again.

OPs story sounds like a good change from the standard. Which means FD is gaining progress. I've seen it recently with NPC encounters, and even if it has to be the arcade pattern of no matter where you are they will show up, as long as FD does it in a manner that doesn't turn the player away they have done it correctly. And that is what we want, or should want.

I've been staying away from the engineers aspect, but maybe if I did a grind for engine/thruster upgrades I could pimp out the 'conda enough to outrun the pirates.... *Sigh*

You know a lot of players are quite willing to run escort for little or no pay.

If you want to mine in a big ship but me up, I would love to help.

Being a escort is why I brought this game but only now I don't have money issues is it viable. (which is the fault of the forum goers, conviced that even limited credit transfers are the devil)
