Newcomer / Intro Looking at the beta Coriolis site for builds

I watched the videos about the new release that's right around the corner but I never saw or it never registered with me that we are losing the discovery scanners. It's not in the list of modules you can add or upgrade. If it's now something built into the ship it does free up a slot that can be used for other things? If so that's a good thing. Or, did the beta site just forget to add them? It has already removed the restricted passenger cabin slots for the SK ships. https://beta.coriolis.edcd.io/

If you're in any way playing in/with the beta, you really should read the rlease/patch notes:

....

Exploration

  • ..
  • Switched the Discovery Scanner to a built in module, that is fitted to all ships. This frees up a slot for players to use. Refunded credits too
  • ...

You also should, if possible, use the "official" coriolis site. The EDCD site may or may not be up to date (and, AFAIK, both sites are now run by the same team).

This is really cool, it gives so much more value to smaller ships, even it is just a class 1 slot, one slot more is all it takes sometimes. And for ships, which hadn't this scanner fittted anyway, it will not change much - but they are able to scan systems now, what they couldn't do before. So still added value. I really like this feature.

No, not in the beta right now. I was just reading a post over on the Dangerous Discussions and someone posted their build. I went to look at it and saw no scanner then went to the beta Coriolis site and they didn't offer one. Just a curious question.

It was a surprise, to many at least, that appeared in this weeks version of the beta. Almost everybody has been happy about the change.

The usual thing with upgrades to the game is that there are things included that are not mentioned in advance or are just hinted at.

I wonder if the built in scanner is equivalent to the advanced discovery scanner? That would be nice since the ADS is sure pricey. Guess well find out when the full release goes live. Glad I haven't purchased one yet too. That would be a kick in the butt to buy one and the next week it's gone....

Yes/no/maybe :D
The new scanner started out last week as a replacement module for all the discovery scanners which magically disappeared from our ships and were replaced by it and a refund if you had paid for anything above basic, this week the new scanner module vanished leaving an empty rack and the cost of the old basic scanner was added to our pockets.

Range wise it is the equivalent of the old advanced scanner functions wise it also includes the capabilities of the old surface scanner it does however require us to earn our exploration points not just press a button.

Yes the surface scanner has been changed and now maps planets and rings, and yes it is more involved than just getting close enough.

Have some faith, Grashopper :p

Even if you did buy a new ADS this week, a) 3.3 won't be out for some time (hopefully, but not guaranteed, this year, though) and b) FD refunded the price for the ADS(es) for those pilots who were affected by this swap. So you wouldn't lose anything - the new scanner is free.

As for "equivalent" - opinions vary. From "this kills exploration" to "finally something to do".

I sure like that it will free up a slot if you needed a scanner and were short on space. Exciting times they are albeit we are given the excitement in small doses. I'll be tuned in later when the live feed starts to see what the new ships will be. Lots of speculation...

I really should pay more attention to what news is coming out about the new release instead of trying to source food or clothing for my nagging passengers.

From what I've seen in the live stream about exploration it is something, what one has to learn how to do it, it is not just invoke the scanner and get system data to sell, it has several steps to get to the full system information and it takes a while to do it. So it certainly is not something for a lazy explorer, it takes effort to get to the complete data, but there is as well new reward for getting the complete record.

From what I recall steps are like this:

First invoke a pulse scan - it will reveal over time certain areas, were stellar bodies could be. After a while several of those areas appear and the "horizontal plain" of this system can be established where most of the stellar bodies can be found in. Later on one is focussing on specific areas mapped out and find the stellar body, focuses in on it and gets an analysis of it's contents. This can all be done remotely from the sun's position. Just if a planetary scan has to be made (to get to a planetary map), one has to supercruise to the planet and shoot probes at the planetary surface.

After re-watching the live streamed video about mining again I checked the Coriolis beta site for those fancy doo dads they were demonstrating but none are present at the moment. That abrasion laser and the drill with the explosive head are pretty cool looking. I know a few of you have talked about the slow go with small mining lasers so I hope this might offset that effort a little and make it more enjoyable. I have my Type 6 now (MSS Dusty) but not set up for mining yet. Gonna just haul stuff and nonsense with it right now and let it pay for it's own upgrades until I'm ready to put on my hard hat and go chipping. Getting ready for the live stream today... I like these live videos on what's just around the corner. Am I still 6 hours behind gmt? Central US time but we had the time change last week and I get confused about it quite a lot. Worse when the missus calls back to Australia because it's always tomorrow there. It's like living in the past....

I found the new mining to be appalling really. Sure, blowing up an asteroid was impressive but it didn't produce much. I honestly produced more by traditional mining laser than all the new stuff together. Any extra beyond the normal mining seems very little compared to the time it takes to locate and extract it. Seems much more productive to go look for more mining-laser stuff.

The pulse wave scanner is confusing to me, I can't quite work out what exactly it is highlighting - some say it is just physical structure but others say it is highlighting higher concentrations of resources. Anywayup, that is for a utility slot.

However, saying that, the T-6 can only carry the small mining lasers so you might get a bit of a plus from also taking an abrasion-blaster although two size 1 mining lasers might be more lucrative - I don't know. The other two new tools are launchers and require hardpoints too so you are restricted in a T-6 there again.

Beta of course is beta - maybe things will be better on release.

Yes, this feels strange, I know - you are UTC-6 with CST currently - me for example, I have UTC+11 with AEDT (because it is going towards summer here) - so I am 17 hours ahead of you. If I want to play with german friends in their evening, I have to get up at 6am, when their 8pm evening starts. So I am nearly, but not quite, on the opposite side of the globe from them, what makes keeping friendships alive not always easy, especially when they expect evening vibes from me when it is early morning here :D

If it turns out the small lasers don't cut it for me after all the new release dust is settled and I really need more hard points I guess I can always trade it in for a Keelback. A little less cargo but it does have the hard points and it keeps me in the ship size I wanna be in (small to medium). This is one of those "I really gotta try it to see if I like it" kinda things. Might end up scrapping the whole adventure for something else.

Just for info re earlier points in the thread. I did a couple of short yootoobs tonight on the new disco scan and on planetary mapping using probes to discover and locate surface features. Unfortunately due to me not being au fait with the OBS prog my dialogue audio is very low (which may well be a blessing in disguise ;) ).

Anyway if anyone wants to see the new disco scan usage here it is in a system that was a bit confusing at first as it discovered two planets but didn't display them although if I had been on-the-ball I would have noticed their icons on the x-axis of the FSA display:

The mapping by probes video shows one of the planets from the first vid, probe launching and feature discovery and then visiting one:

They really are not very good videos, sorry (these are my first attempts using OBS software), but I thought they might help.

mapping the planet with just 4 probes - quite a job and from that distance, well done.

And to the missing one at first - eventually it was obscured by the sun and so you couldn't detect it - at least it appeared to me to be that way.
