Galnet Update

The succession struggle for the Imperial throne continues apace:

The Emperor's denouncement of his son Harold as mad, and announcement of his intention to marry childhood sweetheart Florence Lavigny, have served to confer legitimacy (in more ways than one) to Florence's daughter Arissa. She duly announced her intention to change her surname to Duval and appears to be positioning herself and Chancellor Anders Blaine as the continuity 'ticket'.

Aisling Duval, Harold's daughter, is meanwhile using her celebrity to court public sympathy and pick a fight with Senator Torval over the latter's slaving activities.

Imperial Senators Zemina Torval and Denton Patreus are both at large in the galaxy, Torval freeing unregulated Federal slaves over the holiday period and Patreus fighting a series of covert and overt wars in different systems (with varying degrees of success).

The Federation has had its share of problems too. President Halsey's denial of responsibility for the Onionhead farm bombings in Kappa Fornacis seems to have exposed divisions in the hierarchy that Shadow President Hudson has lost no time in exploiting.

Tensions between both Empire and Federation appear to be coming to a head over the Sanna system. Sanna wants to leave the Federation in protest over the recent tax increases, and Senator Patreus is only too willing to offer his particular brand of help.

You can catch up on all the news outside the game on our website.
Reminder: Race to Elite
We are offering a separate cash prize to the first player who attains Elite status for each of combat, trading and exploration, and a further cash prize for the first player to attain the coveted Triple Elite status for total mastery of all three.

This is a skill-based competition to provide, in true Elite fashion, a little mercenary fun over the festive period for you. There are the following prizes for the first person to reach:

1. Elite in combat - £1,000 or $1,500 or €1,200*
2. Elite in exploration - £1,000 or $1,500 or €1,200*
3. Elite in trading - £1,000 or $1,500 or €1,200*
4. Elite in all three - £10,000 or $15,000 or €12,000*

Players choosing to claim one of the £1,000 cash prizes will make them ineligible for the ‘triple’ prize, though one player could get more than one of the £1,000 prizes.

Please see our forums for more competition details and Terms and Conditions.

Vigilante
Isinona rings in the New Year with the latest in his fantastic Flight Assist Off series - Vigilante:
Wonders Of The Galaxy 7
CMDR Titus Balls reminds us of the wonders of the galaxy in number 7 of his beautiful series:
Comms Chatter
When CMDR Alexander De Large on Reddit earned his permit to visit Sol, he decided to put together a guided tour with some facts to accompany his trip.
CMDR Volt on Reddit put together a handy infographic about the profits of exploration.
CMDR Ligerzero459 on Reddit tells us about a fatal mistake he made whilst exploring:
"Finally had my first major stupid mistake. Finally made it out to HIP 35926, headed on my way to VY Canis Majoris, after about 4 days of jumping in real-time (I only get to play about 2 hours day). I'm flying a round for a bit, just taking it all in, and decide to throttle down and check out the scenery in the system map. I pull the throttle back and pop up the map. Spend a little time taking some pictures and then drop out of the system view...
...And the primary star is completely filling my canopy. I haven't dropped out of SC, but with a large blue star, I'm frying like an egg on the road in the middle of July. I whip my Cobra around as fast as I can and throttle all the way up, but I know it's not enough.
240% heat...250%...260%
Frak, I'm not gaining speed fast enough. crack, crick, crack And my canopy is cracking....great...
270%...280%...290%...300%
crack...crack...whoosh The indicator telling me that I have 7:30 of oxygen remaining pops up as my heat keeps climbing and my hull keeps dropping. I'm traveling at 2c now, but still not making headway. But it doesn't matter anymore. I haven't seen a station in 30 jumps. I throttled back and accepted my fate.
370%...380%...390%...400%
Finally, mercifully, my hull hits 0% and my Cobra disintegrated in a blinding explosion.
I'm back at the last station I stopped at before I headed in to the wide open abyss of space, over 1000 LY from HIP 35926, and trying to decide if it's worth the time to make the trip again, because that system was awesome and the money was going to be great. But man, that's going to be a long 3 days of re-jumping.
TL;DR Thought I throttled down before looking at the system map. Hyper-giant blue star welcomed me in its warm embrace."
Lots of new players have been finding their way in Elite: Dangerous, and we have some budding new photographers. Cmdr Daxtarr on Reddit shared his first few in-game snaps - he shows promise!

Rather than who has the oldest ''blurb'' from FDev contest, my OP was presented as a ''seasonal'' end of year/new year (5yrs ago) comparison with the current December/January ED newsletter (which has just arrived)
Happy New Year to all! 😜
