Ships Looking for a beginner Chieftain PvE build.

Hello guys, I'm pretty new to the game and just reached Elite exloration as that's the activity I enjoy most.
I also have a slightly enginereed Python for missions and a Vulture for combat, said Vulture served me well in resource sites and kill missions but I find the two hardpoints a bit dull, I also just love the Chieftain's looks.

So I'm looking for a beginner's build with no engineering (as I only have Farseer unlocked due to me exploring so much) to take easy/medium PvE combat like beacons, res sites and kill/massacre missions and to serve as a base for me to engineer when I get around to unlock the rest.

Thanks in advance!

I built a ship with only Farseer engineering :) You can take out all engineering mods and it will be the same build, no changes.

Do you have guardian mods unlocked? That would change it a bit as those are not engineering dependent and can give a nice boost to non-engineered ships. Something like this:

EDIT: Edited the builds a bit to improve defenses.

This looks very nice,thank you!

No guardian tech so far, I started two weeks ago and havn't even tried yet, but I plan to at least follow this walkthrough soonish to unlock some modules, as soon as I'm in the mood to travel again.

If you want to engineer for combat, I would consider shields+boosters and armour+hull reinforcements as first priority. Unlocking the Dweller for PD is also easy.

I like flying the chieftain myself, can highly recommend getting the dirty drag drives for it. It's nice to fly even before engineering. For outfitting, you essentially fill it with hull reinforcements and a couple module reinforcements. I use one 4D and one 2D module reinforcements. Weapons depends on what you like. I'm using Pacifiers and Cytoscramblers (both are powerplay unlocks). Try things out to see what you like!

Aye, unlocking more engineers is also in the to-do list :D I'll just start with the base build and slowly go from there once I get more engis/materials.

That's what I did. It doesn't take as long as I expected to unlock what I needed for combat. I would consider those 3 I mentioned the most important (PD because it's so easy and lead to shields) and Palin as the next goal.

...PD because it's so easy and lead to shields..

Easy enough to find a minor faction not aligned to a major that you don't care about and take a hauling mission, as long as it's got five units you're good - you don't need more than that, and if you have already used black markets before for what ever reason you'll need even fewer - When you quit the mission you keep the items you've got and they'll be marked as stolen.

Now all you need to do is use Inara to find 5 local systems with a black market presence.
I've also noticed you need to grind up standings with Sirius corp and also trade in 50 markets, the best way to do that of course is at the same time - check the map to see if you've been to the mission system(s) before if you haven't guaranteed +1 to the market quota just sell a unit of whatever is cheap - it's not counting your profits it's your activity.
There's also a youtube video

which makes material gathering something you can do in a few hours depending upon your own focus ability, even then as you'll be trading the materials you don't need for those you do it's not something you're going to need to do on a regular basis, unless you have a large fleet of ships of course.

Hope this helps, hope it's not too off topic.

My chief is running two class 3 gimbaled burst lasers with one class 2 and three class 1 gimbaled multi-cannons.

As for engineering, once you get them unlocked, the bursts are efficient/oversized. The medium and two of the small multi-cannons are overcharged/autoloader with the third small being high capacity/corrosive.

The chieftain is made for rails in the c1 slots.
Use some gimbals of your choice, and put rails in the three c1s.
That way your ship still packs more punch then a Vulture, but you'll slowly get accustomed to rail guns, which are very very useful.
Also you'll never be annoyed by chaff again, as you can train your rails then, and once you have access to engineering you can apply feedback cascade to two of the rails and those endless-banking pythons and anacondas will only make you smile knowingly 🤗
