Hardware & Technical Looking for a good around the ear PC headset

My Carcharias set is showing it's age. The mic won't stay put unless I jury rig it with a paper clip, and the volume control is getting shadier by the day.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good around the ear set? I don't want anything that actually rests on the ear, as they're ridiculously uncomfortable for me.

Oh, didn't read properly. Disregard.

I've had a set of older model Sennheisers for a few years now that are still going strong after countless hours of use. They're super comfortable, light, and have fantastic audio quality. It looks like their Game Zero and Game One cans are the newer versions of the old PC350 and PC360 so those would be my recommendation. If you don't have to worry about noise bleed through bothering other people then I really like the open air model just because it makes them even comfier for long duration gaming since there's airflow to your ears.

Just be sure to stay away from all the super fancy sounding multi-speaker fake surround sound jobbies or all the XTREME GAEMER SO MANY LEDS crap because that stuff tends to just randomly die after a year.

I agree with TOGSolid about Sennheisers being long lasting. I have had a cheapish pair for a good few years and the connection on the mic finally gave up last week. It has had a lot of abuse over the years. As that model was not available anymore I settled for a set of PC320's from Amazon UK. Very pleased with them so far. Although over the ear I chose open design also as it keeps ears cooler over long periods and also doesn't shut me off completely from the outside world. If Sennheiser is good enough for the air traffic controllers at Swanwick, then it's good enough for me.

Building your own with a Modmic is a really good idea as it opens up your options. The modmic 4 is the same as the 5 but you have to pick unidirectional or monodirectional (5 has both but costs almost twice as much). Can't recommend that method enough having bought many headsets in my time.

Failing that, I have owned the PC350s and those are really comfortable and sound very good. The mic is fairly great too.

Not heard of Modmic before. Looks very interesting. How good are the mics? I presume you went for unidirectional as I cant see the point to omnidirectional for a boom mic.

I got the Sennheiser open-design gaming headset. With open headphones, the soundwaves hit your ear and escape the headphones (the sound in more mellow/less bright and the soundstage is wider and less in your head); with a closed design, the soundwave repeatedly bounces around in the headphone and hurts sound quality and makes it sound too harsh for my liking. The open headphones are OPEN so have less sound isolation, but if you're alone in a room, it isn't a problem.

It was a pain to set up with my PC (a lot of people had issues with this) and setting up the right frequency in Windows options, but once I got it going it was great. Went for unidirectional so my keyboard wasn't picked up but omnidirectional does sound better (however they both sound very good). As it was primarily for gaming, I saw no reason to go for the slightly better sounding omnidirectional one.

My only other problem is my headphones already have two 3.5mm cables coming off them and adding a 3rd made the cable itself quite heavy - I had to fix that by routing it properly under my desk but that is an extra little concern.

Also, got the names wrong - thanks for the correction :D

Sorry for the double post - forgot to quote you and mention another thing: I got weird feedback on mine too and had to buy a very cheap USB sound card to clear it up. Cost less than a fiver.

I had a couple of Headsets in place but very most of them are unacceptable to wear if you have glasses.
The best for this purpose I had in use was a Sennheiser PC-12 delivering decent sound at no weight.
A very good on-ear headset.

Currently becuase not communicating that much I am wearing a 25+ year old HD 560 Ovation II headphone
from Sennheiser. Replaced over the years cabeling and ear pads. But its still awesome sound in it.

Regards,
Miklos
