i am getting itchy feet as the saying goes, and no its not athletes foot

i love my DBx but ive been in it for months and its pretty much pimped out to the max with engineers with countless rolls i would never be able to improve upon.

yes there is other engineers coming in a few weeks so im in no rush to head out anywhere before getting the life support and other such tweaked, but in the meantime i am in the market for a ship... but what ship.

i flew an anaconda recently and i hated it, too slow, turned like a barge and staring at that top deck blocking most of the view was awful.

ironically i flew the space cow and got on with that, better flying position, but again its not an everyday ship and it dont require modifying.

so the only ships not accessible to me are the cutter & corvette because of rank.

Ships i haven't flown are;

Federal assault ship
Federal drop ship
Federal gun ship
Orca

Ships i really want to fly

Dolphin!

credits don't seam to be an issue and i can outfit correctly any ship (bar cutter / vette due to rank) i dont think i should work on rank after my experience with the conda, i imagine the cutter / vette to be similar, i may also be mistaken?

so the question is what other ship should i modify, which i hopefully wont get bored of, and i could use at some point in the future!

added poll to the thread :) or it will come live in a second please bear with it!

what i spend most of my time doing is exploration, other than that its flying across the bubble doing a bit of this and that, my DBx has served well at a few cargo hauling missions with 44T and also hoping here and there, and the odd Res site when im bored killing pirates and other scum

i love Plasma accelerators

oh and PS i think the Asp x is a bit like a white transit van, its just meh, gets the job done but its boring, i need an exciting somewhat "different" ship, the clipper is in my mind at the minute but please sway me away as i have been in the clipper before and sent it to the storage yard after 2 days :(

Get the Cutter, do basic engineering mods, get 2 SRV's and wait for the fighter bay. Then go explore. My Cutter has an empty jump range of 24.5LY, with SRV and 416T cargo it's 19LY. With long range missions it prints money. My speed is boosted to 400 m/s.

She's awesome!!!!!

its ironic that you can print money once in a cutter!

that jump seams low if you have a build to share :)... my worry is i wont like it, i only spent a few days in the clipper with a similar look, i honestly think im destined for smaller ships and all ranking up will do is keep me occupied for a few weeks.

does it handle like a barge?

see this is why we need to be able to test drive ships :)

It drifts, but, you learn to think ahead of the ship. In a smaller ship you just man handle it, in the larger ships you have to think ahead of them! I like the smaller ships, but, with fighter bays coming, I can bring one with me around the Galaxy.

I only have 1 ship, as I like to move around, but, I've owned every ship in the game thus far. My favorites are: cobra MKIII, FDL, Cutter.

Depends on what you want, isn't it? Do you want range? Luxury? Push boundaries? Visit places in the galaxy where range has no consequence? Want to do touristy things? I can tell you which ships I like but that not the same. I have two accounts, both explorers. This account flies an Asp for extreme range. I will be getting an extreme range conda too. My other account flies a Cobra Mk III. People explore in a variety of ships and for a variety of reasons. If money is not an issue perhaps buy the ships to try them and sell them if not your thing? You could also try them on the beta?

PS. Have you now sold your exploration data? Can you reveal where the spec at the endge of space was?

Test driving ships is one of the reasons I bought into Beta. :)

That said, Python. Does everything except SLF, handles well with modded drives, has wood paneling. (Unmodded range is a problem, but DWE Pythons still had a quite a high success rate.)

Yes someone posted a python with a 44 Ly range which I find amazing. Obviously bare bones but still 44 Ly on a python is awesome.

Like the majority of the voters so far, I'd recommend trying a Courier. Flying on planets with its tuned-up enhanced thrusters is a joy, and since the ship is so small, it certainly has a different feel in space too. You can see my two Couriers here, and they are two separate ships that I do tend to use. But even if you try a Courier, don't end up liking it and leave it to collect dust in your hangar, it'll still cost you much less credits than many other ships would.

Yes, the Courier is ablast.
But if you Are interested in the Dolphin you should give the Orca a try. It is a pleasure to fly, but the jumprange is meh :D

S!

Go for the courier and mod it up. It's aesthetics can't be beat, and I find its the best handling ship in the game for FAOff. (I fly 100% FAOff). With FSD range and lightweight weapon mods, you can have a well armed explorer with near 30ly range. Add clean drive tuning to the enhanced thrusters, and you can outrun or outmaneuver just about anything.

I also voted for the Courier, for the same reasons people have already mentioned; however, the fuel scoop is a major drawback. I don't know whether the new Engineers can do anything about that; I'm hoping they can.

At first I was thinking about the Asp but it is kinda too obvious answer for any long range stuff. Thus +1 for Courier. Throw in a decent G5 FSD, modified enhanced performance thrusters and kit it with low weight stuff such as medium warhead launchers of your choice with G5 lightweight mods. You get acceptable shields, firepower for hairy situations, awesome speed&maneuverability, 30+ LY empty jump range and a choice of modules to suit your preference. Only two drawbacks from top of my head: rather slow fuel scoop combined with mediocre thermal performance require some attention in form of modifications (low emissions PP, with nasty drawbacks on mass and power output though - the Courier HATES any extra mass).

In my opinion, the Courier's 8T fuel tank is somewhat oversized. 4T is perfect, but you can go with 6T (by adding an extra 2T tank) if you must. A 3A fuel scoop will fill that in 34 seconds, which is quite good. (@ Jackie Silver: Unfortunately, no new mods help with that.) However, the ship does need a low emissions power plant mod if you aren't careful with your scooping. The Courier's boon and bane is that it's very sensitive to mass: even little mass savings can yield sizeable jump range increases, but that goes the other way around too. You really have to weigh carefully what you bring with yourself.
Because of this though, the ship is not just fun but also rewarding to tinker with.

I have spent 90% of my time in Elite in my Asp Explorer and I love it to death, BUT since you say you aren't fond of the ship (I understand why people aren't), and you say you want to explore in this new ship, I can only suggest the ship that has recently become my second favorite ship for exploration in the whole game:

The Imperial Courier.

This is how I have mine outfitted:

https://coriolis.io/outfit/imperial...t0i3uv62i2f.Iw18UA==.IwBj4iGZ1I==?bn=Explorer

With a 4T tank, both scanners, one SRV, a fairly quick 3A fuel scoop, a 3A AFMU, surprisingly strong 2D shields, enhanced 3A thrusters!, and a great roll on a level 5 FSD mod, this little beauty of a thrilling ship can jump 36 lys with a full tank, cruises at 508 m/s, and boosts up to 640 m/s. All of that plus she looks incredible and the view out the seat is fantastic. She is literally the most fun ship to fly I've experienced in the game yet, and I swear if I could get the jump range anywhere near the Asp's I would literally never fly the Asp again.

So yeah, I voted Courier.

And now I want a Courier too...

What Mengy said.

I haven't flown a Courier but I used to explore in an Eagle and the cockpit view is probably very similar. You don't really feel like you're in the spaceship. Instead, you feel like you're actually naked in space.

Now I want a Courier.

Yep, I have an I-Eagle all tricked out and it's a super fun ship to fly too, the Courier feels exactly like that, only with more internal space, better sounds, and in an even more breathtakingly beautiful looking package. The Courier is just a slightly larger, slightly slower, better equipped I-Eagle that can jump much, much farther.

Makes me literally drool with stupid eagerness for a medium sized Imperial ship to be added to the game. [yesnod]

Adder

I recently got one (a-rated) up to 32 ly jump range. I loved this ship so much I took it 22,000 ly and asked my bf for a paint job for it. I've tried all of the ships for Exploration at this point. Of those the Type 9 is the best for surveying planetary surface: barnacle hunts. Especially if you bring a Courier partner along. We have a really modified Courier just for this that works out great and made one for myself more recently. Both of the Adder and the Courier are pretty inexpensive, but they have some heat management issues in the beginning. You'll want to take care of that quickly. Once you have those out of the way they're both fantastic explorers.
