Game Discussions Looking for a "programming" game...

Long ago, when the internet was new and shiny, I used to play a cool little game called "Combat Zone".

Basically, it consisted of a text-editor and a little square "Arena" that looked a bit like Windows Minefield.

You'd open up the text-editor and write simple programs to guide a little robot around the Arena and fight similar robots.
You'd have to ensure it could detect the edges of the Arena and hazards within it, move it around, detect other robots, raise/lower a shield, locate an enemy robot and aim/fire at it.
You could also go to a website and upload/download robot programs and then see who's robots were the best.

Anybody know if there's currently anything similar available, ideally for an Android phone?

There are a couple around. Saw some footage of just a robo programmable game. Then there is this fairly new one where you program a drone to mine and fight on asteroids 'Nimbatus' its name I believe.

I think SpaceChem still works on Android phones (iOS support was dropped a few years back) and its a good puzzle game which pretty much involves writing a program via icons and a grid.

Human Resource Machine follows a similar visual programming path.

All Zachtronic games kinda feature programming but not so much combat.

You could take a look at Gladiabots too, also available on Play Store.

Hmm, is it FUN though, or is it merely an exercise in making your bots act smart?

For what little I played it back at the time, I found it fun. Of course FUN is not a dogma carved by a lightning on some stone, so making your bots act smart may well be fun for lots of people 🤓
