Looking for a small railgun fighter

Ok, so I put a medium railgun on an i-Eagle, fired two test shots on a desert planet and the shipn started cooking itself :D

I swapped it for a medium PA (paired with two small fixed cannons). Not what I originally wanted, but still fun. Made a bit over 1M in a High RES before running out of ammo. Next time I will try the railgun DBS, sounds more like what I was aiming for.

I didn't find heat management with 2 rails on the Eagle that bad, even with chaff instead of heat sinks.. I found it quite fun actually.. you just can't fire your shots too quickly or you will cook yourself.

Thankyou for the biggest chuckle I've had so far today ;)

Seriously consider clean over dirty drives... Serious heat savings.

Or just buy a DBS, add the biggest agility/speed boost to the ship that's already at the top of the group here for agility, and don't worry about heat because it's a damn DBS ;)

Triple rail iCourier is great fun! Not sure if it is still capable of doing this without meltdown, but the 3 x imperial hammer variant was the biggest blast I've had in a combat zone in yonks.

Short answer : you can't.

Since the rail rebalancing, they generate much more heat. With hammers, you can use one on the courrier. (it's still fun).
I discovered that the expanded amo mod is kind of broken with the hammers, since you get like 5 shots per clips, but 3 shots per salvo,
the second burst will do : pew pew / long reload / pew which is actualy pretty bad.

DBS is by far the best small ship for using railguns. It's the only one that can really cope with their new heat output and it's one of the more nimble fighters to boot.

Not true, NPC iEagles have no problems spamming them all day long. Any NPC ships really. I guess they did not get the memo about the railguns "rebalance" XD

I tried to make rails work in a Viper IV, tried it with both small and again with mediums. Both times it was just kinda meh.

I think the two best ships you'll find for it are going to be, as everyone else is saying, the DBS, or the Asp Scout. While it's not really "small" the Asp Scout offers similar agility to the DBS, but you gain a bigger power plant and a bigger distro, both of which will come in really handy with railguns.

Your welcome :p
I haven't had much experience with trying to control the heat tbh, never experienced the heat death that sounds so terrible, in the eagle at least, she can take a bit of warmth.. 100%... 120% mmm toasty! You'll run out of ammo before your modules will cook! I think that's why I had no problems ;) Either that or I take waaaaay too long to line my shots up and the thing naturally cools itself by then :D (Probably that tbh haha)
I don't think my pilots lungs are feeling too good from all that smoke rising off the dash though...

That's a shame, that build was awesome fun! Oh well, maybe ai'll go an all missile setup or something.

I guess it may finally be time to get me a DBS. I guess I do like the "Hind" look it has.
