Looking for advice on a self-sufficient Cobra Mk III. MAY NEVER RETURN!!! (By choice, of course)

With the recent first-contact incident, I'm scared. Really scared.

So much so that I'm keenly watching a proposal for finding a safe-haven elsewhere.

I need a Cobra that can survive. For who knows how long. If a war erupts, I don't want to be there. [yesnod]

What equipment should I consider? Let's not worry about engineer mods. I'm not looking to break exploration records, I'm just looking to keep moving, scouring the galaxy for new worlds.

The one thing I need, for sure, is a fuel scoop, big one, obviously, and an SRV hangar. But what size hangar? One that can carry two buggies or just the one?

Two heat sinks or one?

Carry a DSS or just stick to lvl 2 scans? That extra slot could instead accommodate something else. Hell, cabins might be nice, if space-legs turn out to be 2.4? I don't know!

I also need to keep costs down, so would it be entirely daft to opt for C-rated thrusters over A-rates? So far my experience with them, (right now I'm really poor), suggests that they're fine for most planets.

What do you think guys?

Fuel Scoop, AFMU, SRV hangar (1 vehicle bay is fine if you're not a reckless SRV driver and repair it often enough), DSS (so you know before landing what materials are present), D thrusters are fine (again, if you're careful & have shields).

if you plan to stay out potentially forever, i would go for two srv. things happen.

the rest like zieman said.

you can as well take 2 heatsinks, because there is not really something else for your utilities --- if you are scared you most likely don't want to have wake- or manifest scanners with you.

no need for cargo racks, if you are going into hiding.

bring a small mining laser...

If its for survival and not for fighting, why not take a Lakon Type 6 instead. You can cram a little more useful gear into one of those, with just about as quick an escape speed.

You're going to hide? "Out There"? In a Cobra III? [ugh] It can be done, of course but sort of short on module slots, I think. If you intend to stay away from the bubble you will need both a fuel-scoop and an AFMU since there are no gas-stations out there to fuel you up or maintain/repair your systems. If you want to remain productive you will probably want to go exploring and so will also need at minimum an Advanced Discovery Scanner and a (Terrestrial Bodies?) scanner. If you want to break up the space-only monotony by driving on a planetary surface you are going to need an SRV.

If you want to disappear for a while, maybe go exploring, IMO the best "less expensive" ship to do that in is an Asp-X. [up] It is called the Asp-Explorer for a reason, after all. Long enough legs so you can make decent jumps if you need/want to, enough module slots to be useful, very flexible module & job-wise and great visibility out through the canopy. More expensive to purchase & outfit than a Cobra III obviously but it is a bigger ship with more of everything, more module slots, jump range, cargo capacity, weapons hard-points, utility module mounts, etc. etc.. Yes, there is a Diamondback Explorer (DBX) too, but IMO (again) the DBX is only slightly less basic than the Cobra III.

[yesnod] If you want to disappear, consider the Asp-Explorer (Asp-X).

Which direction will you go?

How can you be sure you're not heading towards them?

:D

This is true, but I'm going on the assumption that the Aliens want to murder the bubble.

The problem is I want to run in style, and I have a very stylish Cobra Mk III. PC Gamer skin, bodykit... Gotta' be proud of your home!

Pah, been out 16 months and counting in mine. I've got two AFMUs and no SRV bay because SRV bays didn't exist the last time I was in outfitting. Take my sig, swap out one AFMU for an SRV bay (maybe add a mining laser now you can get materials that way too) and Bob's your uncle. You can stay out as long as you want.

Plus the Mk III is a timeless design classic and all round fantastic ship.

Nice build, and with some power-fiddling, I too, it seems, can *just* run a 2A PP.
