Looking for advice on SRV refueling strategy

On long trips away from starports and outposts I understand that fuel synthesis using raw materials is the method for SRV refueling. So collecting raw materials and stocking up whenever the SRV fuel runs low is the correct strategy. To do that, I've been flying to a landable planet, setting down, and then driving around watching the wave scanner for candidate outcroppings. When I've searched a reasonable area around the landing site I reboard the ship and fly to a different location to repeat the process. It's time consuming and makes me anxious about running out of SRV fuel in the middle of nowhere. Is this the best strategy. Are there other alternatives? Is it possible to identify the locations of candidate outcroppings from the ship while in orbital cruise (ideally) or regular flight (slower)? Or is the only method to set down and drive around using the wave scanner?

There sure is.

Using the FSS scanner you can already here detect the planets with geological signals. Once you have scanned all the planets, you can use the system map to see what kind of materials the planet has. Once you find planets with the right materials, you just land at the Geo sites, there'll be plenty of materials.

If you are confident your SRV won't be seeing combat, turn off your shield generator inside your SRV. Shield doesn't protect against terrain.

Theres a few other modules you don't need for cargo scooping materials.

This should increase your fuel efficiency.
That was the best advice around SRVs I ever received, makes a big difference.

Actually, on second thought, the best advice I ever received around SRVs was to fly it and not drive it. Much more fun.

The SRV has a backup mode that kicks in when the tank is empty, allowing you to limp back to your ship. Basic synth takes phosphorus and sulfur, which can both be mined from asteroids if need be. Higher synth levels can be useful if you know you'll be driving a lot, but docking anywhere will automatically refuel with the basic stuff so usually I don't bother. Premium repair synth however does survive the auto repair so basically stays on forever.

Before the trip, it would be good idea for you to open up eddb.io, find bodies with volcanism (which means it will have geo sites) that contain Technetium and Ruthenium. Land there, shoot up and collect everything you see. Raw mats are always handy. Then trade down to Phosphorus and Sulphur. You would be able to max out these bins, while still keeping lots of those G4 Raws. After you do that, you will never have to worry about SRV fuel ever again. Btw, re-arm requires (2) sulphur and phosphorus too, so getting stocked could really come in handy if you plan to go deep into the void.

The best way (albeit for me) is to go to a raw materials trader and simply trade down 6:1 for the grade 1 mats that you need. You can max your grade 1 storage out which will be good for a long time!

Use crystalline shard sites to get grade 5 materials for trading down. These are a little way out of the bubble but you won't need to visit them very often.

I never used preem refuel, ammo or repair but the refuel synth wasnt a problem back then and should now be even easier. The preem stuff was impossible to find and collect, the basic stuff wasnt.

Crops spawn randomly depend on distance, just drive around ship 1 km and will spawn right below your wheels.
Sulphur is more common then phos.
So what I do once you found phosphorus refuel + rearm ship. That uses 2xph and 3xsph = u need to find 1 of each to keep it 300/300. And full fuel.
Trick is if u drive more then 5 minutes since last refuel AND you see phosphorus -> do rearm + refuel now again.

On long expeditions I also occasionally search for carriers. The "refuel all' works for the SRV as well. altough P and S aren't that hard to find I rather spend some credits to be sure.

Yes, I agree with a lot of the above, if you are worried about the SRV running ing out of fuel, you know, this is a big concern. You might consider stocking up on the required mats, around 100 of each should be bundles, of course the other thing is, keep an eye on your fuel, if it gets low and you have no mats, recall the ship.

Excellent advice. Thanks.

Ah. Good plan. I'll d

I'll do that for sure.

Oh. Really. That's reassuring.

Basic fuel, even with the shields on, lasts about an hour and costs just one Sulphur and one Phosphorus to restock.
(the enhanced synthesis options for fuel are not at all worth it - a Premium synthesis lasts three times as longer, and will take tens of times as long to collect the materials for even in fairly good conditions, so stick with Basic)

So shooting a few rocks will give you fuel for hours. If you can find rocks with the wave scanner, you cannot possibly run out of fuel - when it gets down to 25%, maybe take a break from whatever it is you're doing and go find some rocks - they're all over the place. EXCEPT on a metal-rich world, Sulphur and Phosphorus never appear. If you plan to spend an extended amount of time driving around one of those, make sure you've got maybe ten of each in stock before you start.

If you do a lot of driving around on planets - enough to make the fuel tank an issue in the first place - you will have picked up enough Sulphur and Phosphorus just by shooting the rocks you go past that you'll end up at 300 of both in no time.
