Looking for answers

Hey Commanders...

Let me first say that this game is a breath of fresh air on the xbox one (unlike anything I've played before). I am enjoying it immensely even though it is a beta.
The two main problems that are persisting are the constant 'crashing back to dashboard' (which has been better over the past few days for me, but i know friends that are still having this issue), and getting into a wing.

So my questions are as follows:

1) what is the main cause of the crashing issue?

2) does anyone know if frontier have issued a date for patching the winging up with friends issue?

any info would be greatly appreciated guys/girls

I don't know about your XB1 crashes - but looking at my network sniffer logs the primary correlation with crashes are XB1's trying to connect with each other, and for whatever reason that connection is impossible or refused. The game client chokes, and it's all over.

It's got nothing to do with XBL connectivity - and I'd venture a guess that it's because many XB1 players are simply using free equipment from their ISP's - and have no idea how to either update it, or replace it with something more powerful than a tub of butter.

One MAJOR cause of crashing is the STATION TYPE you try to dock with. This current build has a confirmed issue with the ORBIS STARPORT Type station model. The instability is apparently coupled with the sound effects engine, so you will get a lot of audio distortion from these stations too, and it gets really bad just before a crash.

Unfortunately, there is a disproportional amount of the ORBIS in the game, so avoiding them until the next build is hard to do if you take missions off the Bulletin Board. But if you focus on RARE ITEMS trading, then you can put together a nice trade route that excludes any ORBIS stations and this will net you a MUCH BETTER session experience.

Since I stopped visiting any locations that employ an ORBIS, my crash rate has dropped by 85%!

I did a detailed statistical comparison of all the station types in the game over two days, and the results were very telling. I submitted my findings to the developers and they confirmed that the ORBIS BUG is a known issue. So... Despite what others will claim to the contrary, the problem with this particular station type IS REAL, and those who proceed forward based on that fact will have a much smoother gaming experience with this current build.

Hopefully when the next update comes out, that new build would have fixed this problem with the ORBIS and we can get back to playing the game without always worrying about the next crash to the dashboard.

At least for me now, I have much less problems. I am still playing on the same boot of the game I launched 11 hours ago and not a single crash. I have not come close to an ORBIS, and that has a lot to do with it. ;)

I may crash once or twice a day with an entire day of playing I dock at every type of Starport as well as run combat the only time I seem to have any sort of issue is when loading message board or sometimes on a very rare occasion while outfitting. But since switching to solo play I very very very seldom crash but I'm also running the game on a 120/120 connection so lag is non existent even if I'm downloading movies and watching Netflix at the same time

You are most definitely in the minority, especially with a connection speed like that. There are significant issues with the game that hopefully they can sort out before the game goes to a public release. Based on the average connection speeds in the US, the majority of player's connections are not going to handle the current performance of the game's online component very well at all, and that needs to change dramatically. There are other games out for the XB1 like GTA5 for example which do far more heavy lifting than ED is doing and an installed user base far larger than ED will likely ever generate, and they have managed to pull off a locked 30fps or 60fps, so the hardware is fully capable of running this game like butter for everyone who wants to play it if the game is properly optimized.

From what I hear, they are fully aware of where the game is falling on its face, and they are working hard on optimizing the code for the XB1 hardware, which should also help the PC and Mac versions cause much of that code is shared across all platforms. Why it has taken them this long to get down to doing what normally gets done at the beginning is a mystery to me, but I'm glad that the XB1 port has forced them to deal with the reality/shortcomings of their current work, and they are not too proud to admit that it isn't cutting it anywhere close to where it needs to be to run the way an XB1 console game is expected to run.

Thanks for the intel guys, that does answer the crashing issue for me and it makes a lot of sense 'GG7'. Appreciate the time and answer and will definitely relay that message to my friends to tackle this with a different approach.

Anyone know when they are going to patch the xb1 friends list to winging up? have any dates been confirmed?

I rarely crash. Honest.

And I don't know how connected these two things are, but..

A.) I have a pretty decent internet connection.

and

B.) I clear my cache once a day.

Try B out and let me know if you still have issues.

Here he goes again with his network banter.
It's nothing to do with inferior equipment.
The devs are working daily on fixes and are well aware of the crashing issues.

how do you clear the cache on xb1 lol?

Hold the power button on the console till it shuts down, 5-6 seconds.

To his argument, I also own and do not rent my own router and modem.

Aye indeed this right here is what I do when I crash and I usually don't crash a second time

I do this EVERY console shut down.

And I only crash after 7+ hours of playing straight. Then I clear the cache and I'm going to go for a long while.

My guess is that a lot of people crashing either rarely clear their crash, or worse.. use the "Instant On" "feature"

  1. Press and hold the power button on the front of the console until it powers down completely.
  2. Unplug the power cable from the back of the console so that the power brick in not connected to the console.
  3. Press the power button on the console three or four times. This will ensure that any remaining power in the battery is drained, clearing the cache on the console.
  4. Plug the power cable back into the console.
  5. Wait for the light on the power brick to change from white to orange.
  6. Turn on the console using the power button.

I play anywhere from 1-3 hours a day(wish I could play more), didn't play at all Friday and I haven't had a crash in probably over a week and a half!!I guess it must have something to do with longer sessions. Maybe the preview build just becomes really taxing on the Xbox at some point. Although when it first came out the crashing was pretty bad. It really appears they did something to fix most of the problem.

I only do step one, no issues after that.
