Newcomer / Intro Looking for combat things to do

So now that I got a decent combat ship, I was wondering if you can recommend any combat activities besides flying into random combat zones and joining one of the factions.

Are there any other things or progressions in that area?

Thanks!

"There is no hunting like the hunting of man, and those who have hunted armed men long enough and liked it, never care for anything else thereafter."

Head to San Tu and hit the chat.

Edit - Vs the AI, unidentified Signal Sources (USS) sometimes offer variety of different scenarios - attack/defend a convoy and so on.

Assuming you don’t want to pick on players who might not be interested there are the various Resource Extraction Sites and Navigational Beacons, High and Compromised respectively have the added risk of there being no security forces to help out.
Other than that you can get told where to go shoot stuff by the mission boards some of which will tie in with the Conflict Zones.

As already said, fit an FSD interdictor and go to Deciat or Shinrarta Dezhra. I can assure you that if you stick at it, you'll make very rapid progress.

PvP's been covered above, but if you're looking for PvE alternatives, a couple of suggestions.

CZs are what you mentioned. Instances like RES sites, or CNBs are sort of the same, but no faction or side is joined, you're just identifying and engaging wanted ships. There's no win condition, just sort of freelancing. If you find the intensity of this sort of combat doesn't provide enough challenge then the pirate threat instances are a big step up. Nothing in my Elite career came as as a big of a shock as my first visit in a pirate threat. I felt just like the soldier, Bors, in Monty Python's Holy Grail who said the immortal words

Right! Silly little bleeder. One rabbit stew comin' right up!

Then I nearly lost my ship against a freakin' NPC Chieftain. That thing was no joke, and no mistake!

I warned you, but did you listen to me? Oh, no, you knew it all, didn't you? Oh, it's just a harmless little bunny, isn't it? Well, it's always the same. I always tell them....

Assassinations are another good PvE option. AX combat (NHSS) is a different sort of challenge, though I've only done scout hunting. But it encourages a different sort of build, unique weaponry and outfitting, and targets that have skills and advantages that NPC ships don't have. A nice change of pace.

I'm surprised no one mentioned seal clubbing... Giv'em fresh s some lesson to remember... ;)

On more serious note: in certain areas, there are compromised nav beacons... There you can find plenty of targets... Sometimes other players also drop in, so you can also enjoy some PvP with probably likely minded person... And if you start shooting at someone who does not enjoy you shooting at him, have some mercy and do not needlessly kill... But on the other hand, it is a sand box, role play is expected... Do you want to be a murderer? :)

Sometimes having a goal in common with others adds a certain je ne sais quoi to an activity.* You can join a project that's involved in the BGS to advance a faction's influence within a star system, expand from a star system, etc. There are lots of missions to do this which include assassinations, bounty-hunting, hostage liberation (and other goodies), and CZ combat. Examples abound, many of which are very easy-going in terms of commitment.

Also, if you have not, I recommend trying combat with a wing mate. It adds a layer of fun to CZ combat and makes those wing hit missions more fun.

* Pardon my French ;)
