Looking for ideas/Things to keep me amused in Elite

Hi everyone. I'm hoping some of you might be able to help me. I accept I'm probably going to sound very negative, or "Wanting the world", but I can't help feel like I'm missing something in Elite. I understand that everyones milage will of course vary in line with their own attitudes etc.

I've played Elite on and off since Beta, when I play it I love its feel, I love the genre, I love the nature and essence of the what the game was designed to be, but I always find myself losing interest after a week or two and then it goes unplayed for a few months. As such I didn't buy Horizons or Engineers. I feel at the moment with Elite, sort of how a lot of people who bought No Mans Sky feel, in that I had so much high hope for the game and it's feeling like it fell incredibly short. I'm hoping however that feeling can be changed :)

I've done a bit in PP over several months, got to rank 3, however I found that when I did give it a bloody good crack the act of maintaining the merits and working up to rank 4 was either incredibly repetitive through undermining but without that "Just one more" feeling, or I had to leave Elite running and come back every 30mins just to get a few leaflets etc for preparation/fortification (Didn't have massive amounts of money to throw at it) which takes forever, so I got bored with PP.

Did a bit of Exploration in my Asp, went out to Sol etc.... was fun for a while but then it got quite dull due to the seeming repetitiveness. I've done some combat in pvp and sites, traded from station to station, run mission after mission, and mined for hours.... but everything felt like such a grindfest or just plain monotonous.

In Elite, I've always found that due to it's sheer size, it's very difficult to mix things up for variation on a daily basis without spending a good while travelling from system to system to system endlessly; I.E. A bit of exploration here, a bit of piracy there. I'm hoping the ship transfer changes will help there however.

I have a Type-7 hauler, a combat Vulture, a Type-6 I used to mine in and an Asp for missions/exploration.

The end result of the above is that, as I said, it's very difficult for Elite to hold my interests long term in the same way that other games have through their various mechanisms, e.g. EVE Online's use of alts or SWTOR's many character classes/storylines.

Perhaps I'm missing the point somewhere along the line? What am I doing wrong in Elite that is causing it to feel stale/tedious after just a few weeks? I even mix Elite in with playing other games to try and keep it fresh. I work and have wife aggro so it's not even as though I'm burning myself out in Elite by playing non-stop for days on end.

I feel that I'm still very much a learner in the game, that going hand in hand with the on-off playing time in Elite.

If anyone has experienced the same/similar feelings, or has ideas, then I'd love to hear those experiences and ideas please.

Either way, fly safe.

I get it. I found that having a ship with at least 25 ly(fully laden A rated)
jump range transformed the game and made more activities less of a grind. Engineering made my Python a true multi purpose beast.

Given the upcoming instant ship-transfer in 2.2, I think your "mixing it up" problems are about to disappear :)
