I just read about some sort of nasty revolts or something near Sorbago and a few other systems. In game events and such. I want to help influence the game but I haven't come across anything. I'm currently on my way to Sorbago, but apparently the revolt fighting there was near dec. 23rd so it might all be over. I'm dying to get in on the npc wars and all that, where might I find info about all of this?

^ this is the issue, I can't seem to find conflict zones. I happened to come across a random one but there was no battle going on, just a whole mess of ships from one faction only flying around. Never saw another one after and I don't even recall the system I was in. You would think, as MadFable said, there would be a much easier way to find conflict zones in such a heavily documented war going on.
The Sorbago conflict is over. Check the Galnet news when you are docked to find recent wars going on.
Did you join a faction once you entered the conflict zone?
There were a few conflict zones around Sol a few days ago: Wolf 359 & Barnard's Star. Not sure if there is any action there anymore. I dropped into the high-intensity zone at Wolf 359 and... there were plenty of ships but no fighting. I think one side must have won. At the low-intensity zone in Barnard's Star there was plenty of fighting but it was Federal Navy vs Federal Navy. I assume there were two sides fighting for different factions but it was too confusing so I jumped.
how new is that? i was at sorbago last night and the conflict zones were still there. they don't show up when you jump in sometimes though but visiting a station usually puts them back on the map. the problem i have is that missions to fight in the conflict zones are very rare and missions seem to be the main way to progress with factions. i fought in countless conflict zones and got nowhere but did a few trivial missions carrying 4-5 tons of cargo and found myself with a rank of Lord in the Empire?!
