Looking for monitor advice

Hello folks-

I recently got a new computer for myself. Nothing amazing but way better than I had:

i 5 9400
M.2
16 gig 3200 ram
GTX 1660 SUPER

I tried VR with the Lenova Explorers but I think my eyesight is just to awful. So that leaves me with a monitor.

I ordered an TrackIR and my 2 monitor choices are:

MSI 144, 17in curved 1080p
Or
LG 75, 34 in ultrawide 1440p

Giving that I'm going g to be using TrackIR to look about is it worth giving up the 2k resolution and considerable screen real estate for the smaller yet faster monitor?

Thanks so much for any insight you have.

144hz will be better for gaming (the smaller one/did you mean 27"?), however the larger the screen you have the higher the resolution you'll need to keep a decent picture, and if gaming on 2k it may cause more stress on the GPU resulting in slower FPS

The 1660 ti in my laptop preforms splendidly on my laptop at 1080 with high refresh and everything turned up to nosebleed.
The GTX 1080 I had in my desktop could sometimes struggle with my 1440 monitor.
Go for the 1080p and you'll be able to play with everything turned up to eleven with that card.

At 25fps with no anti-aliasing and everything set to 1986.

my gtx 1070 8gb runs 2560 x 1440 on ultra, smooth as silk, 110 - 120 fps in station for example:

a 1660 should handle 1440 OK even on ultra-wide

Higher refresh rates aren't just marketing talk, assuming the display's pixel response can generally keep up with what's advertised but Elite: Dangerous isn't the sort of game that benefits dramatically from a high refresh rate.

I'd prioritize refresh rate over an ultrawide aspect ratio, but not over a higher vertical resolution, within reason.
