Newcomer / Intro Looking for other players in game. Social functions?

I have been playing since beta, am a veteran of the original 2 games.

I am wondering how to find and meet other players in game. I thought I saw someone try to contact me on chat, just as I was zooming of into FSD.

That was a while ago now.

So how random are the starting locations for new players? I mean can someone with really bad luck spawn in some far-flung backwater system in the galaxy, or are players made to start within some distance of Sol or some other core system?

I have seen plenty of other traffic, are these players or NPC ships I'm seeing? Is there a way to distinguish between them (conventional MMOs have the player name hovering over the character)?

Do I just need to randomly comm them and see if a player responds?

I would be nice if you could leave message at stations, appearing on the bulletin board for other players to read.

players have cmdr before their names and they will be a square rectangle with no fill []

if you hit '2' while in a system, a list of ships will pop up beside the chat window. These are all players. NPCs do not show up on the comms contact panel.

What about starting locations? I have seen the route plotted to SOL from where I am at. Lordy it's far away.. so im kinds wondering what the distibution of players is like.. are they all beelining to the core systems areound sol? That kind of thing..

No lol.. i am approx the same distance to sol, on the opposite side (galactic center) just beyond Achenaar? But if you started near there it gives a good indication of the initial spread no?
