Looking for some advice on next combat ship after vulture

Currently out in the deep in my DBX... but when I return I'll be back for some combat. Think i'll have anout 80m when I get back.

Truely love the vulture

So considering (probably in order of where my preference seems to be at moment)

1) Chieftan
2) FDL (am thinking fsd range will annoy?)
3) Python cheap build and use it as an all rounder I gradually build to A rate.

Not much of a space trucker... but like all other parts of game and also want to do some thargoid and gaurdian sightseeing.

Any tips appreciated!

... also when I say combat I mean pve

Also one other question before I went of exploring I started trying Flight assist off. Had it on the left right rocker under the throttle of my thrustmater... right for boost and left when held down as FAO but when released back to flight assist on. Seemed to work ok for me... but have now watched some combat videos and people seem to just toggle to FAO at start of combat and leave it there.

So question is before I get to used to my mixing of flight off and on... should I jist bite the bullet and go full FAO for combat?

I have no experience with the Chieftain yet, so I'll not comment on that one.

FDL is excellent, but combat is literally all it can do, and the jump range and fuel tank is a massive downer. Full price is about 120,000,000cr.
Python is also excellent, but it can do pretty much everything else. But, a cheap build is generally a flying coffin. Minimum spend for a combat Python is about the same as the FDL, but that's without armour, so you must rely on speed, which means A rated Thrusters and DD5 ASAP.

Another suggestion is the FAS, or Federal Gunship.
FAS is apparently more like the Vulture, and the gunship is similar, but SLF capable.

There's also the Imperial Clipper, but, uh... It's crap. Lol

CMDR Cosmic Spacehead

Depends on what you want
if you want a combat based ship that can do some multipurpose ... Chieftan (its also a lot cheaper and you'll be able to a rate it no prob)
if you want a multipurpose based ship that can do some combat ... python (best all rounder in the game)
if you want an out and out combat ship ... FDL

The Vulture was my 1st main ship and was my main ship right up to getting a python, if the chief would have been around then I probably would have bought one of those inbetween

Thanks... that's pretty much my thinking.

Get back from exploring... a week or two in my vulture getting my combat legs back and some engineering mats and then into the chieftan for my next new ship. Not in any rush so sounds like chief will give me a nice couple of months to build cash and decide between python or fdl.

Cheers all!

Yh, I'd say it does depend
FDL if you're just gonna be hardcore combat
Python if you want multipurpose
Or Cheiftan as a stepping stone for bigger ships

As someone who has used all, I'd say that Python is probably your best bet, just because of how versatile it really is

For PvE combat I recommend a ship with strong shields, sadly neither FAS nor Chieftain fit into that category.
(Reason for this is you can stay far longer in fights with shieldtanking against NSC then by hulltanking, especially flying in a wing with people who use regeneration/concordant lasers)

(Medium) shield king is the FdL by far, engineer the crap out of it and you reach shields higher than on most corvettes or condas.
You can skip hull armor with an FdL cause it's fast enough to get away from danger pretty much instantly, and packs a nice firepower.
Then the cost is about 90 million buying from Li-Yong Rui or Shinrarta.

I've been flying an engineered Chieftan all weekend for the CG.

It's been a BLAST!!

I thought I'd experiment with the loadout and went with this. I'm sure you will love it. I've not flown my FDL since 2.x and it was a great ship but, the Chieftan, for a fraction of the price will put a huge smile on your face.

PS. Despite the low shielding I've had them drop once in about 16 hours of High CZ fun and when they did, just turn off the boosters and let unleash the insane regen do its thing.

Looks like a boss build and right up my gameplay street. Cheers!

80M leaves you totally broke, no rebuy and only a mediocre build on a Python or FdL. You'll never regret buying a Python if you like to do various different PVE roles in the game, but it's mediocre at absolutely everything. Jack of all trades, master of none - so to speak.

Here's a typical A-rated Python that works well for a range of PVE combat, has an SRV, and needs minimal changes for Thargoid encounters:
https://eddp.co/u/GhV8fZNQ - You'll notice it's 172M CR before discounts, so way out of your price league.

The FdL is a similar story, slightly cheaper but not by a huge amount, and it's really only good for CZ, REZ and Assassinations because of the pitiful jump range and limited internals.

Here's my Chieftain. I've fully-engineered mine but I'm in a hurry so this is just the raw modules just to show the 70M CR costs:
https://eddp.co/u/7aaPuPtg
70M CR with a thermal-modded Bi-weave, no SCB, and all-resistance boosters; I swap out the cargo rack and fuel scoop for more hull armour if I'm shooting at Thargoids. It's a hull tank but shields rebuild in about 20 seconds, so I use that period to 4-2-0 and improve my position with zero worries about some superficial hull/module damage between rebuilds. It's immense fun, mainly due to the vulture-like agility and I've had a few CMDRs interdict me in big ships only to give up without me firing a shot because I'm able to just sit on their tail without ever letting them even get me in their sights.

Many of my experimental choices are a result of running out of raw materials!

I think I would have done 2 super capacitor on the boosters.

I didn't have mats to do high capacity on the small gun applying corrosive but it's most definitely needed but I'm not sure I like the efficient on the MC's too. Sure I can fire everything on 2 pips but I feel that maybe long range would give more DPS. Anyway, good luck with whatever you try and happy dodging.
