Looking for space sim on a old thinkpad

I have a trusty old thinkpad t60p which i upgraded with an ssd and 1tb hdd, 4GB ram and a T7200 dual core and ati 5250 video card.
oh how awesome is this thing if it was 12 years ago.

So i had to try and boot ED on it. which was impossible. and the old combat demo doesn't go further than the first screen.

So what are my options here for space sim shenanigans?
Best graphically looking game i got running playable is half life 2. and Flight sim 2004 with bare minimum fps.
Other games like BF2 and NFSU2 or SW Battlefront 2 run very smooth.

Freespace 2 might be an option, less than £3 on GoG and has loads of mods including quite a few total conversions.
