Looking for the latest, greatest First Person Shooter.

The avalanche of shooters has me scratching my head and wondering what’s new or old.
Looking for a military-ish first person shooter like an ARMA kind of thing with a good single player capability.

All the names I am familiar with look several years old. Not that it’s a bad thing but I will presume “newer is better(?)”
Anyone recommendations to point my GoogleFu at?

Arma..?

The campaign's are usually pretty poor though.

Battlefield 3&4 had good(ish) campaigns.

I never liked CoD, despite the "cinematic" feel. I just couldn't get over how many enemies would spawn from the same 5"X5" shed... Lol

Crysis had a good campaign. Crysis 2 not so much, almost feels like a different game altogether, and I'm just starting 3.

I'm literally 5 years behind when it comes to FPS games. Lol

Arma 3 is my most modern.

All of those games, bar Arma, are available on EA's Origin Access.

DOOM. It's that simple. It was just so... perfect. Like a well oiled finely tuned machine. That's how it feels. Followed closely by Shadow Warrior 2. IMHO those two games understood what a shooter should be. Not messing about, just maximizing the fun and satisfaction from actually shooting the bad guys. Edit: not military shooters :)

Spent the last two hours Googling away. Surprised there has been no “real new” ones in my “area”. Nice single player campaign is a must. Thought this genre was being cranked out constantly.

Funny you mention DOOM. Did take a look at that. Played the original way back when. Looks good. More study needed.

Agree about CoD. Played the older WW2 one and the next after that. Cinematic and cool the first time through but zero replay value right down to the enemies always being in the same place.

Arma III does look good for it’s “age” and is apparently still actively supported - a nice plus to me - with a boatload of add-ons and modding. Another plus. Got Arma II on sale when I first got ED so I never really got into it. My gaming time is not unlimited!

Also took a peek at Wolfenstein 3d. Interesting concept and some of the gameplay loops looked cool.

If you are looking for modern military shooter Arma 3 with mods is your best choice. It has a decent SP campaign and many great free scenarios made by players. Also powerful editor so you can craft your own missions.
Game is constantly updated and supported with very active community, worth checking out.

Titanfall 2 and Deus Ex Mankind Divided if you like a futuristic scenario. Both have very good single player campaigns. Titanfall is much more pure shooter while Deus Ex much more Story/RPG.

Ghost Recon Wildlands if you like tactical open world play in a marvelous Bolivia landscape but don't mind repetitive mission design. It's the closest approx to Arma from all my suggestions but has the weakest "story" but strong "sandbox" elements. I liked it for 10-15h then lost interest but wouldn't mind to revisit it again.

DOOM is pure adrenaline.

The Wolfenstein games have excellent gunplay and single player stories in a fictitious Germans won the war setting. I really enjoyed those! (start with 'new order')

Absolutely bang on.

Arma 3 has so much user made content that no one plays the official missions, especially online. There are many single player campaigns from World War 2, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. There is even Halo and Star wars mods. You are limited only by your hard drive.

I like games in which stealth is important and I play only games with decent single player.
Ghost Recon Wildlands is great fun.
I also enjoyed The Division, although I disliked the extremely tanky bosses.

Both games create ample opportunities for epic shootouts in awesome open worlds and the weapons in both games feel very good.

The latest Doom seems to be very good and it can be bought for 7 bucks or so. I have not yet played it myself, but it is on my list.

I also like to play a stealthy character in all my FPS’s.
Notice Arma has a DLC that looks to be just for sniper types. YT videos look good.
Oooff. Wonder how big a d/l this will be. And not cheap either for the whole kit & kaboodle.
Ah well. No sense dying with a big pile of cash.

I love the entire arma series, but the campaign missions for ArmA 3 (and its expansions) were hit and miss for me.

The TacOps DLC missions were good though, if you want a more thinking mans game.

Okay gentlemen...sold!
100 USD later I got everything (Karts?? It was part of a bundle) and my ISP does free bandwidth real early in the morning which is good since the d/l is huge - 25+ GB.
And the TacOps DLC is also part of the bundle.

Nice, have fun! Make sure to check out:
CUP mods - its a community project that adds all assets and maps from previous Arma games to Arma 3
RHS mods - those adds very hi quality modern vesicles and weapons for USA/Russia and few other nations - important if you dont like futuristic settings of def Arma 3.

Supposedly the ArmA Armour :)D) DLC has been quite well received (I can't get a net connection to update my stuff for another month).

Jets was okay, though I was a little annoyed that the carriers scripting was just lifted from a modders work, rather than intergrating more stuff from VBS.

CUP is great just for the plethora of toys it gives you, albeit the quality isnt great.
I'd recommend ALiVE: I helped test it and its one of the best dynamic 'real' feel mods that allows plug and play with a lot of other mods.

Another one i'd recommend for sheer scale and pushing the engine to its limits is the Halo mod; Operation Trebuchet which I've made a few missions for in the past.

Guess my ISP must have had its Wheaties this morning - or I was the only one dumb enough to be up so early on a holiday.
The whole download took a bit over 90 minutes.
Hopefully get a chance to do “Bootcamp” later today.

And I noted other recommendations for the coming days. DOOM (as who doesn’t like a bit of ammo fueled action) and Deus Ex: Like sci-fi shooters too.

New DooM is really great, gameplay/movement is spot on and extremely fun. And the "story" does not pull you out from the action too much. Someone mentioned new Wolfenstein games - I would not recommend them if you are looking for pure old school shooting game - there are way too many cut scenes and annoying events IMO that pulls you out from pew pew just like in CoD campaigns.
