Looking for the latest, greatest First Person Shooter.

New DooM is really great, gameplay/movement is spot on and extremely fun. And the "story" does not pull you out from the action too much. Someone mentioned new Wolfenstein games - I would not recommend them if you are looking for pure old school shooting game - there are way too many cut scenes and annoying events IMO that pulls you out from pew pew just like in CoD campaigns.

New Doom kinda nailed it. It really supports in your face shotgunning and melee. I really enjoyed that SP. MP not so much - I don't see a point in maps that spawn orbs and buffs and some superpower mode to OHK other players. Piece of crap, imo.

I found that being mobile is the best defense. And better for the goosebumps, too.

I find it depends on your difficulty. On normal and below, I found hiding in a locker/under a table till the alien reverts to 'skulking in vents' mode made the game incredibly easy.

You're right on harder difficulties though.

It certainly is NOT the latest, but I always found that the original Operations Flashpoint (Game of the Year edition) to be very well executed, and well worth a look. The audio quality and level to detail is very good (for example, when you fire a gun you can tell what it is by the difference in the sounds), while the AI is also very good for the era. It can be played multi-player, but the main storylines are very engaging (you can play either from the USA perspective, the Russian side, or the Resistance). The last (Resistance) also has the ability to link between missions; equipment gained in a previous mission should be available in following missions, while any equipment/personnel lost are unavailable in subsequent mission.

While it may well be over 15 years old Codemasters got it very right. The sequel (Dragon Rising) has better graphics, but was not, in my opinion, as good as the original.

For a silly FPS "Armed and Dangerous" is quite a hoot. Weaponry such as The Landshark Gun or The Worlds' Smallest Black Hole in a Box add to the laughs. Produced by Lucas Arts it does, to a fair degree, point a finger of fun at some of the other Lucas products.

I'd go further... the vehicle AI in OFP was better than what you see from ArmA 2 onwards (although I suspect thats more to do with how they handle clutter objects).

If we're talking golden oldies, Hidden and Dangerous (and its sequel) deserve a shout out too.

Doom is almost perfect, the gameplay has you running around all over the place (staying still is death) and rewards aggressive play because it's the fastest way to get health - you're on a constant rampage, keeping an eye on your health because those demons dish out as much as they receive, and the cherry on top is the context-sensitive heavy metal soundtrack.

Another good one that I haven't seen mentioned in this thread is Shadow Warrior 2. A great oldschool shooter, you can choose to specialize in guns (pistols, machine guns, rocket launchers) or ninja (swords, bows and chi abilities), or something in between. The level design and monsters are best described as a mix of fantasy oriental and ghost in the shell. Oh and the soundtrack alone is worth the price:

SW2 was mentioned :) It is great. It's goofy, and silly, and it knows that. Everything is made for pure over the top fun, and I love it.
