Looking to upgrade from a Rift

Is the Rift S worth an upgrade, or the new Quest 2 perhaps? I'm limited on budget, so please don't be suggesting any *K headsets unless I can get one that runs with a 1070 graphics card and costs under £400.
Basically I've been playing in a Rift for years now, and figured to treat myself for my birthday. I paid £799 for my Rift and £399 for additional sensor and Touch controlelers, and you can now get the complete Rift S package for £399 or the Quest 2 for £299.

Has anyone any experience with these, or other headsets in a similar price range that they can recommend?

Much as I would love to recommend a latest gen HMD, such as the Reverb G2 or PiMAX, I would hang fire and persevere with your CV1 until you have a GPU to drive a better headset. With the 3070 or even 3080 cards imminent it would be a better bang for buck to upgrade that 1070 first and then get a better headset.

My 2 cents...

Yeh, unfortunately my current PC only has a 600W PSU and those new cards (awesome as they are) need 750W PSUs, so I'd have to upgrade the whole machine (which would be around £1500, since if I'm doing it, then I'm doing it properly)

changing the psu should be straightforward and less than $200 (£150).

can't give advice on rift-s or quest.

the g2 looks like a real bargain and while it could very much use a powerful card, it appears that at half resolution the quality of the panels and optics alone would be a huge improvement over the cv1 already. they recommend a 1080, your 1070 is just a notch below that. in a month there will be reviews of actual customers. yes, a little over the stated budget, but while you wait hanging on to the rift until a more informed decision is possible maybe you could save up and it would become an option and a quite future proof choice.

i wouldn't invest in facebook right now.

I moved from the CV1 to the S when it came out and haven’t regretted my decision - at the time I was using a GTX 1060 6Gb and didn’t notice any performance difference.

The display has a marked increase in clarity but the sound is a lot worse. Inside-out tracking is great and I’ve not had any issues compared to my previous 3-sensor CV1 set-up.

I’ve tried the first Quest using the Link (on my current GTX 1080) and I wasn’t massively impressed - tracking was quite loose and there was some definite video compression going on. The headset itself wasn’t as comfortable as the Rift S. This was back when the Link first came out in Beta, so it might be improved now or better with the Quest 2.

There are a few threads on this subforum regarding the Rift S and Quest Link, so it might be worth having a look through those for other user’s thoughts.

I bought an s day 1 and never regretted it.
The upgrade in panel resolution is huge compared to the cv1, especially having a full RGB display.

I am in the normal ipd range, so that's a non issue.

Audio, well the cv1 had pretty terrible sound quality to begin with.
The S can be compared to small Bluetooth speakers if you would.
And even me with a big fat head, has had no issue fitting headphones over the strap. They actually fit better than on the cv1.
That is with half a dozen different headphones, mostly over ear and a few on-ear.

If you even give half a opinion about sound, treat it like the built in sound of a tv, nobody that even remotely cares would not use it.
Like listening to music on your phones built in speaker, nobody reviews even the top end iphones poorly because the speaker lacks bass.

That said, these days I might hang in there and see how the quest 2 and updated link works out.
