Loosing all exploration?

I've been mostly bounty hunting in my Cobra, and on did some exploration on the side while going from A to B to C to A. Not really for selling purposes (as I tend to stick around to the same systems), but rather simply to have a complete map of the area and no "unknown" entities on the contacts list.

Sadly, I got blown up (by a stupid NPC ASP which decided to pull its weight and ram me) and much to my dismay all the exploration data is gone.

Again, I don't mind the loss of potential credits, but what irks me is my OCD syndrome in systems I frequently visit. It took a bit to get all those asteroids scanned. :(

Is this intended? Probably yes, but... When DOES that data get saved? Or rather, DOES it get saved permanently? Or can you scan the same system multiple times?

Working as intended. Communicated to the player? No.

I think you retain the data for your own use even if you die (could be wrong, haven't looked), but you definitely lose all your exploration data that you could sell when you die. So when you explore, sell all data you can at each station you visit - distance doesn't matter on the price you get, as long as it's 20LY away so you can actually sell it.

Also, no point in exploring asteroid belts, as they bring no money at all, which makes no sense. Another reason why exploration in its current form is a poorly designed and incomplete mechanic, I'm afraid.
